Windows 10’s frustrating upgrade flaw fixed: What you need to know

A new Windows 10 optional update, which is now rolling out to users, finally resolves problems with the in-place upgrade.

Windows 10 has always offered multiple methods for upgrading the operating system, but with the release of the October 2020 Update, one of those upgrade methods stopped working for users.

In Windows 10 version 20H2, if you attempt to update, reinstall or repair your Windows installation using the Media Creation Tool or Windows 10 ISO file, you will no longer see the “Keep personal files and apps’ or ‘Keep personal files only’ options.

This means you’ll no longer able to keep your data when attempting to install the update or repair the OS.

If you select the third option ‘Nothing’, Media Creation Tool will do a complete reinstall of the operating system and delete your data, apps, and settings. This is obviously not the ideal experience for those who want to do ‘in-place upgrade’ or repair the operating system.

This issue is a result of a problem with the Windows 10 enablement package hosted by Microsoft and it’s only hitting the devices which were upgraded to Windows 10 20H2 using the enablement package or via Windows Update.

Fortunately, Microsoft discovered the issue last month and it was fixed in a preview update released to the testers of the Windows Insider.

Microsoft has now started rolling out the fix to everyone. According to our own tests, the problem is now resolved in Windows 10 KB4586853, and the solution will be part of December Patch Tuesday updates as well.

In Windows 10 Build 19042.662 or newer, you can now select the option that lets you keep your personal files when performing an in-place upgrade.

The option is still broken on devices running older versions of Windows 10 October 2020 Update, but we have heard whispers that Microsoft will publish a new version of the Media Creation Tool later this month or early next year, and it will also include the fix.

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:
    • Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
    • Try different keyboard or mouse.
    • Restart computer, repeatedly.
    • Google for related issues.
    • Update Bios, because why not.
    • Create boot media and revert to windows 7.
The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

i've seen this when the stock USB drivers went kaput. Only ever seen it once - i used a PCI USB 2.0 card and connected the mouse and keyboard to that, and manually updated the USB 2/USB 3 drivers.

Windows 10’s frustrating upgrade flaw fixed: What you need to know

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
