  1. Switched boot drive to new SSD, new windows install

    Hi,

I inherited a computer from a friend. It had Windows 10 on it but an older HDD and older components, maybe 2010-2012ish. As far as i can tell they work fine. The OS and HDD is just real sluggish. So I got a 1TB SSD and attempted to install it to be the boot drive.

I cloned the SSD, set it up as an MBR previously set it up as GPT, system rejected it, converted it back, got into BIOS, and chnaged the boot order in every place I could find the option.

Turns out booting to ANY drive that isn't the original HDD or the USB-boot drive I made causes a disk error and a stall out.

My buddy said to just ditch the cloned HDD and start fresh so we booted up from the USB and reinstalled windows to the SSD.

Computer still will only boot up with the HDD as priority, but now it presents two options for the OS: old HDD and new SSD. Old HDD version results in a reboot loop and either doesn't end or sometimes ends at new SSD login screen. New SSD version takes me to my new login screen and seems to function, just sans all of my old programs and apps.

Please help me understand what the heck is going on. I've spent 20+ hours on this and both my wife and I are mad about it for different reasons. I'm not too computer literate.

I need to know what's happened and how to just make the darn thing boot with the SSD and access the HDD appropriately for games and files.

    :)

  2. New windows 10 installtion on New SSD - wont boot unless old SSD present

It seems you installed Windows while the both SSDs were connected. This would have caused your current problem. Maybe it is sufficient to do this:

    1. Launch the Disk Manager.
    2. Right-click drive C:, then mark it as "active".
    3. Shut down Windows
    4. Open the BIOS and tell it that the new SSD is the primary boot device.
    5. Disconnect the old SSD.
    6. Boot up normally.

If this does not work then you might have to do this:

    1. Disconnect the old SSD.
    2. Re-install Windows on the new SSD, using the Media Creation Tool.

New windows 10 installation in new SSD changing bios to UEFI boot up

I am planning on buying a new SSD and install a fresh copy of windows on it. However, I want to keep my old copy still working and bootable at least until I have transferred all the important stuff over, so I was thinking on installing a boot manager so
that I can choose which version of windows to boot.

    The questions I have are:

    • My old drive booted up using legacy bios/MBR and I want to use GPT/UEFI now. I will setup the new drive accordingly, but i am wondering if I will still be able to boot the old drive once the new drive is GPT/UEFI
    • Any recommendations on which boot manager to use? I was thinking grup2win. Any comments?
    • Should I install the boot manager before or after installing the new windows SSD?
    Thanks all in advance

Switched boot drive to new SSD, new windows install

new ssd, installed win 10, first in boot order but still boots from old hard drive.

I have a pc with a standard hard drive running windows 10 just fine. I got a new SSD. I unplugged all the hard drives, installed the SSD and installed windows 10 on it. I would boot just fine. I then plugged the old hard drive back in thinking I
could switch between these boot drives using the bios boot order. I was able to switch back to booting from the hard drive but now when I change the boot order to the ssd first it always skips over it and boots the from the second option which is the old
hard drive. I thought hard drive data was just data and the bios could choose which drive to boot from but it doesn't. I can see that the old hard drive is listed as active in disk management. It seems like windows will mark only one hard drive as active
and the bios must boot from that no matter what the boot order is. Is that how it works? Is there a way to switch between booting from either drive without opening up the pc and unplugging the other drive each time?
