Windows 10: Windows 10 1909 feature update fails - can't backup BCD

I have been putting off trying to resolve this issue with 1909 failing to install, but with 1809 going out of support soon, I'd like to get it resolved.


I have tried many time to upgrade to 1909 via Windows Update, but it fails every time.


Today I downloaded the media creation tool and made an ISO for the upgrade. I have run the installer several times and each time it fails at the very end of the first cycle when attempting to reboot. Checking the error log reveals this error:

The first significant issue is that, while I have an EFI partition, it was not mounted at F:. I used diskpart to mount it at F:, but the install still fails with this same error.


I am dual booting with Ubuntu and I wonder if something was corrupted during the install process, but I can't be sure.


I can access the mounted F: on CLI but not through explorer.exe. I've seen others report this same issue, but I have not seen a specific solution for my problem. The security issue with the partition seems to be at the heart of the inability of the installer to backup and update the boot code, but I don't know how to solve the problem.

Feature Update v1809 Repeatedly Fails

OK so today i decided to move my System Reserved partition to comply with the rule described in my previous post. My first step was to backup the BCD before moving it, i tried to do this with the bcdedit /export command and was surprised when it failed
with an error. Googling “bcdedit /export fails windows 10” i found a post describing how this had prevented another user upgrading Windows 10. Note that when i tested this command on my lower spec PC I found that it worked fine there.

i therefore believe that this the source of the problem was a corrupt BCD on my higher spec PC and have now recreated my System Reserved partition with a brand new BCD correctly positioned on the disk. I have tested the bcdedit / export command and it works
fine now, so this is clearly a key difference between the two PCs.

I am confident that i will be able to update successfully to v1903 now !.

if anyone is having problems with their feature upgrade installs and it looks as though it is failing at the first reboot, then i suggest testing that the BCD is OK with the bcdedit /export command. If it fails then rebuild your BCD and this may fix your
problem.

When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.

I understand that you are still facing the issue & from the screenshots, I can make out that feature pack update of the build 1909 has superseded the updates for the currently installed build 1809 but 1909 update is also getting failed so as to next step in
solving your issue I suggest you upgrade to the latest feature pack 2004 manually, please follow the below instructions.

Click Update which will download the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant

Step 3:

Run the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant & then click Update now.

Step 4: It will start downloading the update and also shows the percentage of download.
