  1. Windows cannot access \\serverName\\share path

For some time now for about 3 years, users report an error message “Windows cannot access \\file share path”

The work around that has always worked until today, is to have the user reboot, and then they could access the share with no problems.

Today I have a case, where rebooting does not work anymore. I have also tried re-mapping the drive, to no avail.

Here is the interesting thing, that tells me this has something to do with the user and/or user's computer is that:

I myself am a case where the issue happens: I do get the same error Windows cannot access \\share.." when I attempt to access the share path from my computer. However, if I remote desktop to another computer say a Windows 10 computer test box I have, I can access the same exact share with no problems.

I found some references to issues with SMB protocols and such, but am at a loss at what I can try further.

    Some links I found are:

    Thanks for your help

    Cannot access shared network drive

Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

    If this helps.
step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.

  3. How to add NAS shared folders to Win10 Library

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. The steps took me to the same place. I get the error:
This network location can’t be included because it is not indexed error message.

I've tried typing the path instead of browsing, using the \\servername\share. Same result. Error about index.

    Thanks.

    Windows cannot access \\serverName\\share path

    cant access shared folder

We would suggest you to try accessing the shared folder using the path and see if that helps. Follow the steps mentioned below:

Press Windows key + R, to open Run dialog box.

Type \\shared folder path and click on OK.

However, you may try providing permissions to the folder where the files are saved and see if you are able to access the files. Refer the steps mentioned below:

Navigate to the location on the PC through which the files are shared.

Right click on the folder and select Properties.

Click on Sharing tab, and click on Advanced Sharing.

Now, select the checkbox for Share this folder.

Click on Permissions, select the check box for Allow Full Control.

    Click on OK (Twice).

If an IT Administrator manages the folder, then you may have to get in touch with the administrator to reset or grant permissions to access the file.
