    The most recent windows update is hanging after the restart and before you get to the log in screen. The message shows that updates are 100% complete, but it never gets past that point. All you see is a black screen with the message at the bottom that says Updates 100% Complete and the little icon that indicates that some sort of process is going on , the circle with the dots. It nevers gets beyond that. It doesn't respond to any keyboard combination. The only that you can do is to turn it off and then back on. ... After which it spends time undoing all the updates and then reboots normally.


    I am trying to figure out a what is causing this and b how I can get around this to finished the update. Looking in the event log for Windows Updates:

    It seems that The most recent update was a French Language Package. In fact several of the most recent "successful" updates were for language pack items. That, however had to be part of some other update. I certainly did not invoke it.


    Another issue is that my network card seems to be not functioning again ... Message says that the card returned an invalid value to the driver. I can bypass that card with a USB network device, but this is the third network card that has died within 9 months. This one lasted only two weeks at best. ... I am wondering if it is really the network card or a corrupted driver.


    But getting back to the failure to complete and update. How can one get by that?

    Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

    Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

    A quick question before we proceed:

    What is the KB number of the latest update that cause these issue?

    I suggest you to update all device drivers from Device Manager. Once this is done restart the computer to check the status.

    Follow the steps below to update the driver:


    • Press “Windows key + X” together and select “Device Manager”.

    • Locate the touchpad driver.

    • Right click on the Touchpad driver icon and click on “Update Driver software”. Follow the on screen directions and complete the process.
