  1. SSD in GPT wont boot

    Hello Community

This title is found several times in several forums through google. But I didnt found any solution to my problem.

First my PC Setup and what I want to do:

    Motherboard: Z97-K

Disks: Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series 125 GB Windows installed

Samsung SSD 850 EVO Series 500 GB Games and Programs

Samsung SSD 860 EVO Series 1000GB Games and Programs

Goal: Migrate Windows from 125 GB to 500 GB and throw the 125 GB out. Then replace with another 1000GB SSD for Games and Programs

I wiped the 500 GB clean now even with MiniTool Partition Wizard placing zeros and installed Windows on it with an USB, which was prepared via the Media Creation Tool. I tried it with letting Windows setup my GPT clean Command via Diskpart and then "New" Button when in Windows Setup and with manually creating it 300MB System EFI, 128MB MSR, REST Windows, 1000MB Windows RE tool. Both methods give me the same error result. While installing Windows I had only the 500GB SSD plugged in with SATA. No other disk was plugged in.

After the installation the PC restarts and I get a black screen with a white underscore blinking. After some time, it switches to UEFI. When I disable Legacy Support in UEFI then I get an Error Message from UEFI that Legacy Support is disabled instead of the black screen with the white cursor. Usually this means that the Disk is in MBR Format but as you read, I prepared it the right way. So somehow my UEFI does not recognize the Windows Manager on the EFI Partition.

I also disabled Secure Boot. Checked that AHCI is enabled. Updated the UEFI on the MoBo. Did a CMOS reset. The Disk while installing is on the first SATA Port and like said the only one used. I tried the same asdescribed with the 1000 GB SSD and had exactly the same result. However, when I started first, I was stupid and formatted the 125 GB as well before the I installed Windows on the 500GB. For a moment I had no Backup Disk with a running OS. But I managed to reinstall Windows on the 125 GB just fine. I dont understand why I cant get those 500GB and 1000GB SSDs to run Windows.

I wasted the whole Weekend for that and I am at the point where I forget about the extra 1000GB SSD I wanted to buy and just buy another 500GB install the OS there and thats it. But I m unsure if a new SSD will solve my problem.

I m really helpful for some solution suggestions. I m conviced there is no error on my side but maybe I overlooked something.

    :)

    New SSD wont boot

    Hi John

Boot into BIOS, is SATA Mode set to AHCI to enable booting from an SSD drive?

Is the SSD drive set a top of the Boot Priority list?

Did you try connecting that SSD to the SATA Port normally used by your old HDD?

  3. Cannot convert GPT to MBR.

    Hi Michael,

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

This method you have to backup all your data and delete all partitions and volumes. Then use the
    DISKPART command.

    • Open command prompt and type in DISKPART and press Enter
    • Then type in list disk (Note down the number of disk you want to convert to GPT)
    • Then type in select disk number of disk
    • Finally type in convert gpt.
Hope the information helps. Do reply if you need further assistance.

  4. SSD in GPT wont boot

    GPT dilemma

Yes. I'm using WIndows 7 x64. I know that GPT and MBR partitioning applies to the entire disk, but Win7 won't install on pre-pariotioned GPT-marked HDD, and Linux wont install, if there is already 3 NTFS partitions + boot.
So, I've decided to go with my old setup: leave 2 windows partitions and utilize the rest in LVM for linux.
