Windows 10: German characters when installing German application

I use English Language United States, United States - International keyboard sometimes it appears as EN, and sometimes as EN-International on the right of the Taskbar and Region The Netherlands.


I have a DVD with a German program/application.

I have installed this application on several computers before without any problem.


I recently purchase a new desktop with Win 10 Pro and configured language, keyboard and region as usual.

When I installed the German program/application the German character ä the charactera with umlaut - 2 dots did not show but a 'black diamond with question mark inside' cannot find it in the Character Map appears. I have seen that 'sign' in some email providers that are not able to display 'foreign characters' or it has to with a setting 'somewhere'.


After installing the German program/application, it would not start properly. To solve it I replaced all the 'black diamond with question mark inside' with the correct characterä in the respective program files and it worked fine.


However, it is a mystery to me why my new desktop it not behaving like all the other computers that also run on Win 10 Pro and the same configuration.

What language is your keyboard set to?

If you just want the odd German character,click your Start Button, type charmap and hit Enter

If you want more, is your Physical keyboard German, or do you just want to be able to type in German?

Thank you for your rapid response. I have added the character map to my taskbar and can insert what ever I need.

• Do you have German language pack installed on the computer?
• From which operating system did you upgrade to Windows 10?

If you have German language pack installed then I would suggest you to switch to English language pack and then check if it works.

Please revert if you face any issues with Windows in future.
