  1. Performance Analysis Primer (request)

So I have a fairly extensive background in software development and problem solving; I am generally able to troubleshoot "thing not working" with a high degree of confidence. However, I am at something of a loss for troubleshooting techniques for "thing working, but slow".

For context, my specific scenario is that when I am using my PC, sometimes there is a "stutter". Its most noticeable while running games or something of course, but it is still detectable even when the system is near-idle; the motion of the mouse cursor catches/hangs/lags for a brief moment while it is happening.

I have googled it and I find no small number of "lists of things to check". They suggest everything from disabling superfetch, to updating drivers, to disabling OneDrive, etc, etc.

However, I suspect that something as generic as "my machine stutters sometimes" likely has a wide variety of potential root causes, and I dislike the feeling of blindly turning things on and off and hoping that they're related, especially when so many of them aren't.

What I would love to have is some guidance to a website or book or YouTube channel or something that gets into the actual analysis process for performance issues. What kinds of tools could I run that would let me ask, "Computer, I just saw a stutter in the last 2 minutes, tell me what's going on"? I want to learn how to figure out the problem, not just google it and try solutions.

Things I have tried or am aware of:

-Performance Monitor (built into Windows, but seems to require that you know a priori which counters you need to investigate, so useful)

-ProcMon64 (Sysinternals, and has been useful in identifying some issues, but has its limits (would love to filter for Win32 events so I could see who's creating windows that popup and disappear rapidly)

-Wireshark (open source, heavily specialized towards network-latency, so good tool, but limited utility)

-Task Manager (built into Windows, helps spot heavy CPU/Disk usage, but if the problem isn't that it's not that helpful)

-Event Viewer (built into Windows. Sometimes you find an event that corresponds to the time frame and is suggestive, but there's a LOT of stuff there and its hard to know the signal from the noise)

Can anyone steer me to some resources I could leverage to develop competency in this kind of analysis? I am obviously interested in solving my own problem, but it would also be a helpful skill to have from a professional perspective.

a request for device descriptor request failed

Maybe it's time to step back from the current efforts, and start over. I suggest you read over this excellent tutorial and try all of its steps: [Solved] Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) for Windows 10 - Driver Easy. The one that may provide you with some easy relief is the one where you uninstall the device whose descriptor is failing, reboot, and see what happens when device enumeration recurs during boot-up. If you're lucky, it will fix itself.

there is something wrong with suggested for you list on npu page. clicking on picture of dd:da review from suggested for you list leads to perormance analysis instead of review. hovering mouse over it shows in status bar correct link to review but clicking on picture reloads analysis.
links from reviews&articles page works fine.

edit: link from home page of npu sends you to analysis instead of review as well.
