Windows 10: can't transfer photos from Android phone to my laptop

When I try to transfer photos from my android phone to my laptop via a USB cable I get as far as the Import option. When I click import I get the window that should show the photos on my phone but instead of showing the actual photos it just shows the date and a frame with a generic picture on each one. I did not have any trouble transferring photos from my husbands android phone doing it this way. Any ideas? Thanks.

How do I transfer photos from my android phone to my laptop? When I connect them with a USB cable my computer says it can't find any pictures, but there are hundreds of pictures on my phone.

I am having difficulties transferring my photos from my Android phone to Windows 10. With earlier versions of Windows, I would simply plug my phone into the laptop with USB and I would get a box popped up that would ask me what I wanted to do - easy peasy.
Now, when I plug my phone into the USB, I do not get the pop-up box. I can see the phone in My Computer, but I cannot find the photos or move them. I tried to sync my photos to One Drive, thinking that I could then download them from One Drive to my laptop,
but that has not worked for me to date. What is the easiest way to transfer photos from Android phone to Windows 10?
