Windows 10: Audio Input Trouble

I'm having trouble with getting my windows pc to recognize any audio input from my headset.


The computer itself doesn't have any proper auxiliary audio jacks for my headset. But I regularly use an xbox one controller for gaming, so I connect my headset through the controller which does have a jack.

On my xbox, and even my mac book pro, the connecting my headset this way has never been a problem. I get great audio quality through the headphones, and my friends can hear me loud and clear. But for some reason, my PC doesn't pick up the audio. It does recognize the input device, and it does recieve some of the audio. But I have to shout for anything reasonable to go through. My friends simply can't hear me through discord or any other audio based chat services. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could boost my volume?

The headset has a simple mute switch and doesn't control volume on it's end. So I know that's not the issue.

No Audio Input or Output Devices found

After latest windows 10 update no audio devices are listed/

Looking in device manager - the audio devices all say working OK

But on bar at bottem of screen get speaker with red cross -- Playing audio - Audio trouble shouter cannot find any problems ..

Sound settings say - No output or Input devices found.

Have tried to re-install Realtek audio drivers for motherboard -- installed but no change

 

Windows 10 Audio input to programs broken

Recently my audio input, from USB headset and USB guitar cable have stopped working. Going into Windows 'Sounds' and enabling 'Listen to this device' outputs the audio as expected; the problem is not with the devices. However, as soon as I try to use them with any other program, discord, for example, no audio input is detected by discord.

I have tried everything I can think of and some suggestions from Googling around;

• Updating everything - windows, drivers, all related software
  
• Rolling windows back to the last build
  
• Trying different USB ports
  
• Reinstalling drivers and software
  
• Running Windows troubleshooters
  
• Playing with device properties settings
  

But nothing seems to work, any suggestions?
