  1. Media streaming just... stops. WHY?

I'm running Windows 10 on a desktop PC. Windows boots from an SSD C:. On an HDD E: on the same PC, I have a number of folders with films, TV shows and self-created videos.

This PC is connected via Ethernet to my router, an EE Smarthub.

Also connected via Ethernet to my EE Smarthub are a PS4 and a Humax HDR1100s Freesat Recorder. Both these devices have DNLA clients allowing them to stream content from suitable servers on the network.

Until about yesterday, I was able to stream content from the hard drive of my PC to either or both of these devices with very few issues, using either Media Player or Serviio the latter to transcode odd formats. Both devices would usually show both servers the PC and, separately, Serviio

As of the last 36 hours or so, this no longer works... or rather it works sometimes, extremely rarely, and stops randomly for no apparent reason. Reinstalling Serviio worked for about 30 minutes, but then the film that was streaming simply stopped and the PS4 could no longer see the server.

Bafflingly, I can still stream content WIRELESSLY to my PHONE, using BubbleUPnP.

When I go to Windows Media Player, I find that streaming is just switching itself off randomly, and switching it back on DOESN'T WORK. Restarting doesn't work. Uninstalling Media Player by going into "Turn Features On and Off", unchecking it, restarting, checking it, then restarting again, doesn't work.

Furthermore, when I go into Windows Media Player - Stream - More Streaming Options, and look at the "Show Devices on Local Network" list, that list no longer shows the PS4 or the TV box. They're definitely connected to the router and the network perfectly well because they can both run BBC iPlayer to stream content from the internet, and the internet connection to the PC is solid, so the problem is DEFINITELY the media streaming software on my PC.

I haven't deliberately installed any updates, new software or anything in the last couple of days, so I'm baffled how this previously pretty stable system has suddenly become a massively frustrating basket case.

    Can anyone help, please?

    :)

  2. Windows Media Player Streaming

    Hi Chris,

Just like every other Windows component, there are several related services that govern how Media Sharing functions. After you’ve enabled Media Streaming, the status of these services will change to Active by default. However, in some cases, some of them may
be permanently disabled. This prevents Media Streaming from working.

To ensure that related services are up and running, observe the steps below:

    1. To open Services, go to the Windows Search bar and type services.msc.

    2. Locate the UPnP host service in the list and right-click on it. Click on Properties from the menu.

    3. Set the Startup type to Automatic.

    4. Click on Stop > Start to restart the service.

    5. Click OK.

Navigate to the Windows Media Player Network Sharing service. Right-click on it, select properties and then repeat steps 3 to 5.

Close Services and see if you can now use Media Streaming.

It could be that the Flash Player in Edge was disabled after the update. We suggest that you enable it again and see if you are able to stream your media again. Here's how to enable the Flash Player in Edge:

    • Open Edge.
    • Click the "..." on the top-right corner of Edge.
    • Select Settings.
    • Click View advanced settings.
    • Toggle the switch for Adobe Flash Player to enable it.
    • Close the Edge browser window and open a new one.

    Media streaming just... stops. WHY?

    Media streaming problems

Since I got the upgrade to Windows 10, Media player has been at best quirky at worse totally useless. Originally I could stream media to my televisions but any editing I did in media player was not reflected in the DLNA client on the TV, for example genres that had been deleted or changed still appeared in the list. I tried deleting the media player database with no change, I reinstalled media player and now I cant stream anything at all. The server shows up on my TV with the proper categories but the list is always empty. I have turned on streaming, shared the files and added them to the media player database. Since the primary reason for this PC is to stream media to TVs in my house I am very disappointed, is there anyone who might have another idea that I haven't tried ?
