Windows 10: Microsoft Edge update will boost load times by up to 41% on Windows 10

As per the company’s product roadmap, Microsoft Edge’s startup boost feature is now generally available for everyone running the latest version of Windows 10. As the name suggests, this feature will improve the load time of Microsoft Edge by up to 41%.

Microsoft Edge startup boost launches certain browser processes when a Windows 10 device is powered on. In other words, Microsoft Edge processes will be running in the background even before you try to launch the browser. As a result, you’ll notice a sharp decrease in Edge’s load time.

It’s worth noting that this feature was originally introduced with the Edge 88 update and it’s already available for some users. Later this month, Microsoft is planning to enable it for everyone after the company observed a 41% performance improvement.

Initial tests show that Microsoft Edge startup times will by 29% – 41% faster, depending on the configuration of your Windows 10 device.

Startup boost will be enabled automatically, which is good for those who use the browser regularly. However, if you don’t use Edge frequently, you might want to turn off the feature and turn off Edge background processes by following these steps:

• Open Microsoft Edge > Menu > Settings.
• Click on ‘System’.
• Turn on/off “Save resources with sleeping tabs”.
  
• Restart the browser.

It’s also worth noting that Microsoft is still evaluating the data and it may remove devices that do not see expected positive impact.

Vertical tabs layout is now generally available in Microsoft Edge


It has been more than six months since Microsoft announced the vertical tabs layout and the company has been a little quiet on this front since. Today, Microsoft Edge update is rolling out with vertical tabs, which makes it easier for users to manage tabs simultaneously on the left side of the browser.



Unlike the traditional tabs layout, vertical tabs will not shink the tab labels (website name) and it will also support drag-and-drop.

In addition to these changes, Microsoft is also working on a new ‘Shared Links’ experience, which is designed to save your time and energy by surfacing copied links on the history page.

Microsoft Gives Windows 10 a Major Performance Boost

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner."
