    Defender "Preliminary Scan Results"


    When I scan with DEFENDER, this message appears:

    "Preliminary scan results show that malicious or potentially unwanted software might exist on your system. You can review detected items when the scan is complete."


    This message appears normal as I am running this scan because I have reason to believe I picked up some maleware. But, there is nothing to see. There are no Quarantined Items, Allowed Items, or Detected Items. Nothing. This message appears every time I re-scan.


    Please advise.

    defender scans

    Hi Ian,

    Thanks for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

    This issue might occur if you have set any task scheduler for Windows Defender.

    I suggest you to delete the task for Windows defender and check if it helps.

    Follow the below steps:


    • Search and open Schedule tasks.

    • In the left-hand menu, open the Task Scheduler Library, then select
      Microsoft >Windows >Windows Defender.

    • Double-click Windows Defender Scheduled Scan.

    • Select the Triggers panel, then select Delete.

    Preliminary scan results show that malicious or unwanted software may exist on your computer.

    When I scan with Defender, a message at the bottom reads
    "Preliminary scan results show that malicious or potentially unwanted software may exist on your computer. You can review detected items when the scan has completed." I always get a message when finished that says no threats detected. Why does this
    keep happening? I am afraid to do anything with my banking etc...I have all the current updates and I have ran a full scan and restarted my pc. I still keep getting this message about malicious software every time I do a scan. Help! This all started on

    to be guided on checking the results of the Windows Defender
    Offline scan.

    In addition, you can also check the suggestion provided by Cyber_Defend_Team on this
    thread to check for any malware
    under Windows Defender History that may show the recent scan that you've made.
