Windows 10: Start menu pinned apps icons broken

Hey guys.

I have an issue that came up a couple of days ago out of nowhere.

I have game launchers installed on another ssd (games ssd) and got them pinned to start menu. as of couple of days ago they appear to have broken icons, shortcuts work tho and I can still launch my pinned apps.



I have googled around and found a batch file on ms forum that resets it and restarts my pc. I also did it manually by going into local appdata folder and deleting the hidden cache file. Both worked but only for that single session. If i restarted/turned on the pc fresh the icons would be broken again.



both system and games drive are bitlocker encrypted with auto unlock on the games drive enabled.

It only started happening a day or 2 ago after I have restarted my pc after having it on for 4 days straight, its never happened in the whole year I've had this pc. plus I only just freshly installed windows about a month a go as I upgraded to nvme for system drive.

Has there been a recent update that could cause this that I'm not aware or...

Pin to start menu icon cache

Hmm, it does the same for me. *Confused

As a workaround, you could add the shortcut to the All Apps list in the Start menu using an option in the tutorial below. It's not the same as Pin to Start, but it's in the Start menu and uses the custom icon.

How to customize pinned Start Menu icon?

OK, I have a comparable shortcut I added to Windows Accessories to start IE with no add-ons. It is in:
C:\Users\<my name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories
and is an ordinary shortcut to iexplore.exe with some parameters:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

It originally showed the default IE icon on the list of All apps on the left Start menu. I pinned it to Start and it showed the same IE icon. I then did 'More > Open file location' and gave it a different icon. As you can see, both the All apps menu and the Tile show the custom icon now.





This was done with version 1607, what version does Winver say you have? It may be that this doesn't work on earlier versions, the Start menu had a lot of changes from that of 1511.

I suggest you try changing the icon to something else, then back to your preferred icon after you have pinned it to Start. This may kick Windows into showing the correct icon on the Tile.

 

Is my start menu broken?

Just updated as well, and thought I would finally give the windows 10 start menu a go, and not use classic shell. But I'm unsure whether my start menu is broken, and I should do a clean install.

• I can drag a tile from the start menu to the desktop, but I can't drag a desktop icon to the start menu so it becomes a windows 10 tile icon?
• I can right-click a tile and pin a shortcut to the taskbar, but again, I can't right-click a shortcut from the taskbar and pin it to the start menu.
• When dragging tiles around, I have to wait before the animation is done until I can start the next drag.

• I only have two options, large square or small square. Wasn't there a time, where you could have wide and tall and huge tiles? Or does that only works for apps :/? (I don't use any windows 10 apps)
• I can't rename a pinned shortcut?
• And is there still no option to add custom images to icons and make them look nice?

Have Microsoft not had 4 years with these new "tile icons"? And it is till this bad?

The only way for me to pin a program to the start menu is by locating it in the programs list in the start menu and drag or right-click to pin it. I use multiple versions of the same program, but the programs list in the start
menu only shows one, so how on earth to I add a shortcut to the other versions then?
