Specific hard drive - motherboard combo does not start after windows 10 upgrade

    Hi,

I have a very curious problem. It all started with me trying to update an old windows 7 Medion PC to windows 10. Installation went great, until the restart at 30%. It took me a while to figure out, but this was due to the Medion BIOS not working nicely with the windows 10 update, see this blog.

On my most recent attempt, after preparing the windows 10 update, it restarted to start the installation and something must have broken. When I start the computer I very shortly see the medion logo and I can enter the bios. After that screen, the following screen shows up:

After a few minutes, it changes to this:

Now comes the very curious part. I took the harddrive out of the computer and placed it in another computer. When I started it, it succesfully completed the Windows 10 installation. Now, when I put the harddrive back in the original computer, the same thing as displayed on the above image shows up. Now even more curious: When I take the SSD with Windows 10 on it from my other computer, and put it in this computer, it works just fine. It seems to be the combination of motherboard + harddrive that makes this show up, but all cables and the harddrive seem to function just fine.

    What I've tried so far:

1 Changed the HDD sata cable to a different port on the motherboard

2 Reset the BIOS settings to the recommended defaults and tried again

3 Removed the CMOS battery for 10 minutes and tried again

4 Verified that the HDD works in another computer, and that another HDD works in the computer. This both worked.

Any tips on how to resolve this would be much appreciated.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 upgrade rant..

The free space shouldn't prevent you from upgrading to built 1607. I manually upgraded my own laptop which had only 9gigs free space left on the system drive.

I unzipped the Windows 10 Pro anniversary edition ISO on my D drive, and started the upgrade process from there. At one point the installer complained about not having enough free space on the main drive, i just had to point it to the D drive to proceed to the next step. Now the rollback installation is stored there and doesn't clog up the C drive anymore.

In your case you could insert a large sdcard to act as the required rollback drive, i'm pretty sure it would do the trick.

Oh and by the way, if you want to further compress your System files:
    • do a search Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
    • Type COMPACT.EXE /CompactOS:always and hit Enter.
You'll will gain anything from 2 to 4 gigs free space after it's done.

Internal hard drive not getting detected after upgrading the computer to Windows 10

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that after upgrading your computer to Windows 10, the 8TB internal hard drive is not getting detected. I’ll certainly help you with the issue.

    However, please let us know:

    • How did you upgrade the computer to Windows 10?
    • Are you able to see the hard drive in BIOS?
    • Are you using a Desktop or a Laptop?
    • What is the make and model of the computer you are using?

I would suggest you to check if the hard drive is being detected in BIOS. If the hard drive is not being detected in BIOS, then it could be a connectivity issue between the hard drive and the motherboard.

However, if the hard drive is getting detected in BIOS, I would suggest you to try updating the storage drivers from the computer manufacturer’s website and see if that helps.

    Let us know the results.
