Windows 10: What Happens to Calendar Invites Sent to an IMAP Account?

What happens when the built-in Windows 10 Mail/Calendar apps receive a calendar invite addressed to an IMAP account?


As far as I can tell, the invitation simply disappears into a black hole. I can accept the meeting invitation, and it's automatically and immediately removed from my Inbox, but the meeting itself never appears on any calendar. It's just gone.


Details: I have Mail configured to monitor four different email accounts: one for Outlook.com, one iCloud, one Gmail, and one IMAP. Similarly, Calendar is set up to monitor three of those four accounts. IMAP does not support calendars.


1. If I receive a calendar invite sent to my Outlook.com address, it correctly appears on my Outlook calendar.

2. If I receive a calendar invite sent to my iCloud address, it correctly appears on my iCloud calendar.
3. If I receive a calendar invite sent to my Gmail.com address, it correctly appears on my Google calendar.

4. If I receive a calendar invite sent to my IMAP address, it disappears completely and never appears on any calendar.


This seems like a big problem. Surely there's some workaround or configuration tweak I've overlooked.

Replying to calendar invites from Hotmail

I noticed an issue when replying to calendar invites in WP7 secondary hotmail account to an external exchange outlook account. Please see the repro steps below. Is this by design or a some known bug?

• WP7 is setup with a primary live account and secondary account with hotmail.
• A calendar invite was sent from an external exchange outlook account to a WP7 person's secondary hotmail account.
• Person accepted the invite from their hotmail account and sent a response.
• Accepted response was received by the exchange outlook account but the reply is shown from the primary live account name (not the Hotmail account name who actually replied to the invite)

 

Phone not sending calendar invites

My fiance has a Nokia Lumia 822, and I have an HTC 8x. He can create a calendar event on his phone, then choose to add me to the event, then save the event and everything appears to go well except that I never receive the event invite. There is never an
error message of any kind or any indication that an invite was not sent. The event still appears on his calendar, and he sees my name in the attendees list, but I can't see it on my phone or calendar at all.

He has a Microsoft account setup on his phone, as well as an email address with a private domain setup via IMAP.

Just as a proof of concept I went through the exact same steps to create a calendar event on my phone and invite him, and it worked flawlessly. I have a Hotmail account setup and an Exchange account through the same private domain as he.

 

Receiving Outlook Calendar Invitations

When a meeting invite is received and accepted via an IMAP account, the appointment is placed on the calendar that is associated with the IMAP account. If there is no calendar associated with the email account, there's no calendar where the appointment
can be posted. Your live.com email has a calendar and so any invitations that are received via your live.com email account will be posted to the live.com calendar.

If you received most invitations via your IMAP account, you'll need to create a calendar that is associated with your IMAP account and you'll also need to sync that calendar to your phone. Many IMAP email services also include calendars so you may just
need to start using that calendar, syncing it to Outlook 2013 and to your phone.
