Windows 10: Scan Downloaded Word Doc

I have Word 2016, and I'd like to scan a downloaded Word document. My antivirus scans downloads from my friends' emails, and I rely on that, but it doesn't scan a Word document when I download one. Of course the antivirus provider says they catch anything in their regular scheduled scans, and I even sometimes run a non-scheduled scan after a Word download. But I'm not sure that scans all the Word docs. Is there a way to select a Word doc and scan it? I read how to do it for Word 2010, the only info I could find, but right-clicking the file in 2016 doesn't offer a scan. That's how the inf

many thanks for responding and trying to help me. the problem is that all of the docs in various folders that were word docs are no longer word docs - they only open on wordpad (and so parts of the docs cannot be seen). does anyone know why that would
happen?

I actually don't know if I have a current subscription to office.

If you right click on one of the doc files & choose open with is Word listed?
