Microsoft confirms Windows 11 is a free upgrade for Windows 10

Microsoft is making Windows 11 available as a free upgrade to all Windows 10 users. In theory, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 users will also get the update for free if they upgrade to Windows 10. It’s not yet clear if there will be a direct update path to Windows 11 from Windows 7 or 8.1

Starting in the fall of this year, owners of Windows 10 can upgrade to Windows 11 through Windows Update at no cost as long as they have a genuine copy of Windows.

Windows 11 is Microsoft’s successor to Windows 10 desktop operating system and it was announced on June 24. During the event, Microsoft said that it’s launching the operating system for consumers this fall and the company made it clear that it won’t simply open the floodgates, allowing anyone to get the update today.

Instead, as the company has said, Windows 11 will be rolled out to Windows Insiders first next week, so those testers will see the upgrade notification before others.

Is Windows 11 a free upgrade?

Yes, Windows 11 is a free upgrade, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft will be offering the same Windows 10 methods to download Windows 11, including downloading the updates through multiple sources. Later this year, consumers can download it through Microsoft’s Windows Update.

As shown in the above screenshot, Microsoft is working on a new “PC Health Check” tool that will run a compatibility check, and you’ll get feedback on whether your installed software or hardware is compatible with Windows 11.

    Windows as a service

Microsoft is basically continuing the strategy of delivering “Windows as a service”, which means frequent updates will be released to the operating system for free. You can update your existing hardware as long as it meets these requirements:

    • 64-bit CPU
    • 4GB of RAM
    • 64GB of storage.
    • A genuine and activated copy of Windows 10.

This new version of Windows isn’t just a visual update. It brings new features and security improvements to your machine that are crucial to getting your work done. From the simply Start Menu to the new gaming experience you’ll notice instantly, upgrading to Windows 11 will be worth your time.

As you’re probably aware, some Windows features are now unbundled from the main OS so users can get faster updates. Rather than waiting for a full Windows update, Microsoft will be updating features like Windows widgets, native apps like Paint and Notepad via Windows Store.

Windows Search is also web-based, which means these features can be updated with improvements without having to wait for larger OS-wide update.

Microsoft to push automatic Windows 10 upgrades in 2016

"Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be automatically rolled out next year to all users of its older operating systems who have selected to receive updates.

Until now, users of Windows 7 and 8 have needed to register to upgrade to Windows 10. But that's about to change: soon the OS will be listed as an 'Optional Update' and -- from 2016 -- a 'recommended' update that will automatically install itself, if users have opted to receive updates in that way.*Shadedshun :shadedshu:

You can opt out of automatic updates to avoid this, but Microsoftsays that "we strongly discourage this in today’s connected world because of the constant risk of internet threats". You can also change your Windows Update settings to install critical updates but not recommended ones. Although it's still going to be possible to avoid installation, Microsoft seems quite determined for everyone to be using Windows 10 in near future.

The roll-out of reserved updates was initially staggered but, according to Microsoft, now Windows "will automatically kick off the upgrade process once you have made a reservation".

As an intermediate stage, Microsoft says that it will "soon" publish Windows 10 as an optional update, not installed by default, but accessible to all users.

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:
    • Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
    • Try different keyboard or mouse.
    • Restart computer, repeatedly.
    • Google for related issues.
    • Update Bios, because why not.
    • Create boot media and revert to windows 7.
The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.

Microsoft Selects Dolby Audio for Windows 10

it would've been great if microsoft added HEVC decoders, LAV filters along with other codecs with Windows 10, and developing WMP to be better than VLC, KMPlayer and such sorts of media players.

Nevertheless, this is good step for microsoft, by far.
