For whatever reason I have a network one of the unidentified networks which I have repeatedly changed to private however Windows absolutely will not change it from public. I have rebooted, logged in and out etc. The network profile shows it as private but the firewall shows it as active under public. Moreover, after each reboot, Windows reassigns it a static IP address of 192.168.137.2 even though I have updated it to 192.168.1.16. What is even more confounding is that on the command line it will show that connection correctly as 192.168.1.16. If I go to the network properties and try to chan

  2. Change Network Profile

I don't think this quite answers my question.

If the network is recognised as a public how do i change it to a private network.

    You were suggesting

    • Under Private networking, check mark .Turn on Private networking.

the network is recognised as Public. What would changing Private network settings do?

    • Click on save changes.

You can also refer the below chart.

    Change network profile :

Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing settings.

are you suggesting change the public network settings?

  3. Cannot find my network profile to change it to Private

    Hi Andre,

Thank you for your quick response, but this does not help. The link you provided is for Windows 10 wireless.

I need assistance for Windows 8.1.

I do not need help changing a profile from Public to Private. My issue is, I do not have a network profile, Even if these were the correct steps, they do not help. Please read my original issue, and you will see I do not have a network profile, or it's
corrupt, since the get-netconnectionprofile, returns nothing. I am stuck with no way to change the profile at this time.

change network profile in windows 10

TRS80relic that is a great work around and that helped me a lot on many
    systems.

Now The only problem with that is that this only works if you have one N.I.C. What if you have multiple.

So I have 3 NIC's in my system and this solution only fixed one. So I did some more looking and here is the solution (why they changed this from window 7 I will NEVER know)

    here are the steps:

    1. Open powershell

    2. List interfaces: netsh interface ip show interfaces

    3. List individual Interface profile: Get-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceAlias 'ENTER NAME OF INTERFACE'

    4. Change interface to either Private or Public (I chose Private): Set-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceAlias 'ENTER NAME OF INTERFACE' -NetworkCategory Private

    Thanks
