  1. Does "erase all data" delete support drives?

My computer has been very slow because of the RAM getting too busy frequently. So I was going to select this optionafter I tried the only delete apps option when it struck me: "I have a pretty above average graphics card and all that, and I can't do backups of the support driver/apps because my PC is so slow, what do I do?" and I searched the internet for 1 whole week. I couldn't find anything... Can you help me?I am almost sure it won't delete them but I am not taking any risks.P.S. I am Turkish so some translations might be wrong. But I tried to get the same idea.

    :)

  3. Lost data from hard drive, what to do now?

Well, I'm sorry to hear that it's a WD My Passport that failed on you, @tomhenry ! *Frown Does "erase all data" delete support drives? :(
I'd recommend you to try using a different USB cable with it and see if that will help your system to detect it without it disconnecting.
I'd also suggest you to go to Disk Management and see how the drive is listed there. It won't hurt to check up on the health and SMART status of the HDD by running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from the WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics. Here's a link to the available software: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=11ZOpD

Give these troubleshooting steps a try and keep us posted with the results!

Does "erase all data" delete support drives?

Permanent deletion of data on HDD

Securely erase a drive takes time, in case of large size drives, a long time. Depending on the sensitivity of the data, I generally prefer to use BitLocker to encrypt the full drive, not just data. Then use "diskpart" at the command prompt to unlock BitLocker:

    • list disk
    • select disk n, (where the n stands for the disk you want to format.)
    • list partition
    • select partition n, (where the n stands for the encrypted partition you want to delete.)
    • delete partition override
    • exit
Once completed, I usually create a primary partition and use "quick format". In my experience, this procedure is quicker than DBAN by a sizable margin.

    CAUTION!

"Diskpart" will erase disk/partition selected, even if you did not mean it. Be careful when you specify the disk/partition. I should know, I've done that once and learned my lesson...*Redface
