    Physical security key

Facebook forced me to use an alternative sign in method, so I chose the security key. I bought a security key and used it a few times to sign into Facebook, although it's very awkward. Now when I try to log into Facebook I get the request for a security key followed immediately by a request from Windows Security. I did not register the security key with windows. I really don't want to use a security key every time I start my computer, but I'm locked out of Facebook until I get windows to recognize the security key. I am 78 years old and know nothing about computers so need basic help, ste

That made me so facepalm. Some people have absolutely no clue. I hope they don't take you for granted with all this you're doing for them.

SonicWall is a good security product, so Mindweaver's suggestion sounds like a good one and should make for a rather bigger baby step. Let's hope they take it.

  3. Security settings and Personal Vault require a security key, except none is set up

    Hello Steffan,

Good to see you in Microsoft Community.

Were you referring to the fact that you were prompted for a physical security key when you visit your Microsoft account security page in your browser?

    • Could you please send me a screenshot/photo of it in the next reply?
    • Was there any other authentication methods (e.g. email, phone, etc.) on the interface? If there is, you can try them.
If you can successfully verify your identity using other verification methods, you can turn off two-step verification in your Microsoft account, wait for a while, and then turn the feature back on again (as you need). Visit Turning two-step verification on or off for your Microsoft account - Microsoft Support for more details.

If you can't verify your identity, I suggest you try to recover your Microsoft account. Visit Help with the Microsoft account recovery form(microsoft.com) for more details. Theoretically, Microsoft accounts with two-step verification turned on cannot be retrieved through the recovery form, but depending on your actual situation, this is the only last possible solution, otherwise the account will not be available.

If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best Regards,
