Windows 10: How to get my laptop to recognize my headphones as an output device?

I'm trying to use headphones on my laptop. Its a gaming headset. The laptop will recognise that it's been plugged in because the mic works, but the audio is still coming from my laptop, not my headphones. I don't have this problem when I connect my headphones to other devices, like my Xbox. The only output option is "Speakers/Headphones" and under that it says Realtek R Audio. It doesn't show any other output options. I've messed around with the sound options on the Control Panel application and been in my sound mixer options for hours. I'm lost. Can anyone help figure this out?

Headphone Jack does not recognize headset microphone

Hello,

Since a couple days the 3.5mm headphone jack of my computer does not recognize my headset microphone. When its plugged in the audio output works, but it says there is no microphone connected. It does recognize the headphones (audio output).

I already tried all of the following troubleshooting tips:

• The headset works on other devices (Laptop with Windows 11, PlayStation)
  
• Adjusting privacy settings.
  
• Enabling microphone in device manager (however this is not possible because it says its not connected)
  
• Reinstalling the device in control panel.
  
• Updating drives, windows etc.
  
• Other headsets also have the same problem on that port.
  

 

Headphone jack not recognized as output device

Sometime recently, whenever I plug headphones into the jack, the computer tells me "You just plugged a device into the audio jack." But the sound keeps coming out of the laptop speakers. Headphones don't show up under output devices and the Realtek software
only gives me two choices of devices to choose from, Mic or Line in. It seems as if somewhere, Windows 10 or Realtek forgot the jack was input/output. Have uninstalled and reinstalled device software. Anybody have any ideas?

Headphones output device is not plugged in

A quick update about additional steps I tried:

1. Uninstall KB4512508 (no effect)
2. Re-install KB4512508 (no effect)
3. Disable and re-enable High Definition Audio Device via device manager (no effect)
   

As a last ditch I booted the PC with a live OS from USB storage and to my surprise the Headphones socket on the front panel was detected and worked fine. I think this should rule out a hardware-related issue.

Once again, I would appreciate any suggestion to solve this problem.
