Windows 10: Company Abandoned Laptop

Previous employer abandoned laptop and left it in my possession. Since it's been so long, I would like to wipe it and clear my 3 years worth of data on it BUT I don't have admin pass words or the Bitlocker key code. How do I wipe it without these things? I've read threads and tried but to no avail. The laptop is just collecting dust so I want to either utilize it myself or donate it to someone that might need it.

Abandoned company laptop

The company I left last August and gave all my information to so they could get their laptop back has abandoned it. I have been able to login and use it ever since until today. They finally removed my credentials from their database. This laptop is not stolen. When I was let go on August 2nd, 2021 I gave my current address to my superior which is the same place I've resided to this day. They never sent return boxes for the laptop or the large HD 2nd monitor they sent to me as I was told they would and after 10 months I don't believe they are going to. How can I get into this laptop without the Bitlocker key so I can swipe it to use for my personal needs for whatever life it has left. I have Windows 10 and its a HP Elitebook. Please help. I can answer any questions about myself and my former company if needed.

You need to protect yourself in this case so they can't come back and charge you with theft of company property because some superior officer notices it's not been collected. I'd contact the company IT desk and ask about this, even if they say you can keep it ask for this in writing to properly protect yourself.

Sometimes if the company has moved on technically they will just give an employee the equipment, but you cannot take this for granted because they can always change their story and you're still stuck with their laptop in your possession.

If they won't put it in writing I'd write the company a certified letter and explain the situation and tell them where they can find their laptop.


Once you get it's yours to keep clarified in writing to protect yourself, I can help you wipe the drive to reinstall Windows.
