Windows 10: Old Laptop updated, need new product key

I found my old laptop while cleaning the garage. It was running on Windows Vista. I updated it to windows 10 using a USB flash drive that i had used when I previously updated another laptop. Unfortuantly the old laptop product key sticker on the bottom is too faded to read. Is there any thing I can do to get a new product key so that I can let my kids use this laptop for homework etc?

So it seems my new laptops windows isn't genuine. I thought about buying a new copy of windows but then remembered I have this old laptop with its product key still available (but the laptop is demolished), cant I use the product key of the old laptop
to activate windows on my new laptop?

Yes, that would be a favorable solution if possible. But it requires what I said as a first step. Once he gets booted into the OS, then he can either use it as is or try to recover the product key. I'm not saying he couldn't do what you said, I was replying to another post that suggested simply copy/pasting documents from the old hard drive.

LMAO. Was the Key transferrable? Your old laptop probably had a key built into its motherboard, you may have upgraded to Windows 10 then, so you can't take that key and apply to another laptop.

What OS your new laptop came with? I suggest you stick with that. Once, it's activated, then proceed with Windows 10 upgrade. I believe MS is still accepting new upgrades.
