  1. How can I safely install a second instance of Windows 10?

I'm using Windows 10 on an i7 desktop PC. I had a catastrophic crash which forced me to reformat my hard drive and start over by installing Windows 10 from the Win 10 USB drive I used initially. Thankfully that worked OK, and I'm slowly getting function back. Thanks to OneDrive and Office 365, I'm able to function much as I did before. But this time I want to install a second instance of Windows 10, so that if a catastrophe strikes my Windows installation again, I can dual-boot to the other Windows, finish up any critical work, and then if necessary reformat the drive partition and install

    :)

  3. install windows without losing second windows instance

I apologize for the confusion and the issues you encountered.

If the "bootrec /fixboot" command returned an "Access Denied" error and the "bootrec /scanos" command didn't detect any Windows instances, it suggests that there might be some complications with the bootloader.

In this case, I recommend trying the following alternative steps to rebuild the bootloader:

    1. Start your computer using the Windows 10 installation media .

    2. Choose your language preferences and click "Next."

    3. Click on "Repair your computer" (located at the bottom left corner of the screen).

    4. Select "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced options" > "Command Prompt."

    5. In the command prompt window, type the following command and press Enter: diskpart

    6. Type the following command and press Enter: list disk

    7. Identify the disk number associated with the drive containing your Windows installations.

    8. Type the following command and press Enter (replace "X" with the disk number identified in the previous step):

    select disk X

    8. Type the following command and press Enter:

    list volume

    10. Identify the volume number of the partition where your Windows installations are located.

    11. Type the following command and press Enter (replace "Y" with the volume number identified in the previous step):

    select volume Y

    12. Type the following command and press Enter:

    assign letter=Z:

This will assign a temporary drive letter (Z) to the selected volume.

    13. Type the following command and press Enter: exit

    14. Still in the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter (replace "Z" with the temporary drive letter assigned in the previous step):

    Z:

This will change the command prompt to the temporary drive.

    15. Type the following command and press Enter:

    dir

This command will display the contents of the temporary drive.

    16. Look for the "Windows" folder in the directory listing. If you find it, it means you have located the correct partition.

    17. Now, type the following command and press Enter:

    cd Windows\System32

    18. Next, enter the following command and press Enter:

    bcdboot C:\Windows /s Z:

This command will rebuild the bootloader on the temporary drive.

    19. Restart your computer and remove the Windows 10 installation media.

Let me know how it went. Thank you.
