To promote your server as a DNS Server, you are required to configure DNS Forward and Reverse Lookup Zones. The Forward Lookup Zone will resolve hostnames to IP addresses, whereas the Reverse Lookup Zone will resolve IP addresses to hostnames. In this post, we are going to see how you can configure both on a DNS […]

  2. Window DNS

    Hi Guys,

I have come across a weird situation where i have to resolve a reverse lookup zone to AWS DNS server from onprem, a regular reverse lookupzone will not work here because i need route this to cloud dns server so it will not help.

What i am trying to do is create a conditional forwarder in the format of reverse lookup just like below.

    XX.XXX.XX.in-addr.arpa

    IP - X.X.X.X

But problem is i have a existing reverse lookup zone as 10.in-addr.arpa this will not allow me to create the conditional forward (XX.XXX.XX.in-addr.arpa)

the solution i found is create a delegation in the reverselook zone as xx.xxx.10.in-addr.arpa, and then create a conditional forwarder this will resolve the issue but i just don't understand

    1) Why i need a delegation in place to create a CF

2)How are delegation and CF works here together, i know it's two different concepts.

Please help me understanding here whats happening.

    Thanks in advance

  3. Whats the point of multiple zones on a dns server?

Update: Additionally, Why would you create a primary forward lookup zone, allow zone transfers and then create a secondary forward lookup zone on another server. If u only have 1 dns server for whatever reason then I guess it would make sense to forward information to other servers. I mean, I guess maybe it accelerates name resolution, but I mean is it really going to cut time down? Why not just add dns software to every server you have. Is it a security risk?
Thanks for info, Just trying to learn about dns.

PS, I asked this question in server fault but apparently this a a better forum for it so I am reposting. I think this question follows the guidelines but I am a relatively new poster so if it is not then please let me know!
