Windows 10: How to activate Windows on a second hand/refurbished laptop....

My husband purchased a refurbished second hand laptop. There is a message in the corner of the screen says that Windows isn't activated. When I click on Windows activation in settings in says Windows cant be activated because it "can't connect to your organisation's server" and when I click on Troubleshoot it says it found a "windows 11 Home single language digital licence for this device running windows 11 pro. To activate, you need to install windows 11 home single language". How do I do this? I've seen online about creating a "bootable USB".... I have no idea what that means or how to do it

Product Key Activation for second hand laptop?

I got a notification on my acer laptop (touchscreen) saying the windows 10 enterprise licence will expire soon and that I need a product key or something. I tried looking for ways to find the product key, but this is a second- hand laptop, I didn't receive the packaging or anything with it, so I'm not sure what to do ;-; I can't ask the person who gave it to me either. Is there a different way to activate it?

Basic facts

The upgrade:

• Upgraded a couple of days ago from a properly licensed version of Windows 8.1.
• Asked during install to input product key; skipped it as didn't have the key to hand.
  
• Tried to activate post-upgrade but received error to say key blocked.

Next steps:

• Contacted ASUS tech support.
• Told to register laptop online; registered laptop.
• Then told no service for refurbished laptops so no key.

Question: on the basis that: (a) MS say that they will upgrade any compatible device running a genuine copy of Win 7 / 8 / 8.1, and (b) my device is compatible, and (c) it was running a genuine copy of Win 8.1,
then will MS provide me with a key given that ASUS has refused to?
