  3. Error around Universal Print -- How can I fix and do I even need to use Universal Print?

I get about 30 errors in the Event Log multiple times per day, appears to at least occur every time my computer wakes up from sleep but possibly at other times too, both Event ID 1, which alternate between:

    Universal Print

Failed to get auth header with 0x8086000c

    mcpmanagementservice.dll

    and

    Universal Print

User Interaction Required while trying to get a token silently. ErrorCode: 0xcaa10001, Error: Need user interaction to continue.

    mcpmanagementservice.dll

This is in the standard Administrative Events log. I can manually trigger this suite of errors by starting the McpManagementService from the Services list. It shuts itself down after a minute or so. I suspect that means every time the computer wakes up, it tries to start this service, generates all the errors, then it shuts down automatically.

Searching on those errors, I do see some discussion on the Internet, but for other people getting those, they are having printing problems, which I am not. So, maybe these are harmless and should be ignored, but the quantity is high (they represent the lion's share of all error messages every day) and they started suddenly on May 8, maybe after a Windows update restart. Before that, no recurring errors of any significance, with the log going back to early April. After May 8, most errors in the log are those Universal Print errors. Even if they are harmless, I would like to at least stop these from filling up my log, because they fill up the log, they make it harder to spot any other problems.

I think McpManagementService relates to remote printing, which is not anything I need or intend to do, unless that includes printing on the LAN via an IP#, which is how the computer is set up to talk to the printer.

As far as I know, there are no problems communicating with the active printer, an HP CP5525 connected on the LAN via hardwired Ethernet. It prints fine. I do recall some confusion when I first installed it many months ago (long before the errors started) with the new way Windows 11 (may be similar in Windows 10) handles printer installs for the new UI, vs the old one we've had from Windows NT through XP and at least through Windows 7 (maybe 8 and 10 too, not sure). I just want to install the drivers, but I think it wanted me to do something with Universal Print. I don't know what that is. If it's better in some way (like maybe it integrates better with the new Windows 11 Settings pages vs the old Windows printer UI), I'm happy to use it, but if it's just another option with no ongoing usage advantages for Windows 11, then I just assume stick with the tried-and-true driver install method.

Windows can print to the printer using its built-in generic drivers, but I need to install HP's specific drivers, rather than the defaults in order to select the proper paper tray source (won't list Tray 3 or let me setup 11x17 paper sizes otherwise), 1-sided vs 2-sided, and to set up various Printer Preference combinations. None of those are available through the default drivers included with Windows.

Per HP's website, I have downloaded both the latest printer drivers, which are installed in Windows, and their Universal Printer drivers, which I have never used or installed (just downloaded the file, unsure what to do with it). I'm not even sure that HP's "Universal Printer Drivers" mean the same thing as MS' Universal Print. They may just coincidentally be using the same word. I think HP just means the same "universal" drivers work for all their laser printers, where I think MS means something related to Office 365 and remote printing.

Mainly to prevent the generic responses, I have already run through this sequence:

    sfc /scannow

    dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    sfc /scannow

    Restart PC

I can confirm that the errors continue after that. I have just this morning tried disabling McpManagementService, but I have no idea if that's wise. I'd rather understand what's causing the errors.

I'm not sure if I've given enough info here for you guys to help me solve this, so if you need more info to help, please let me know.

Error around Universal Print -- How can I fix and do I even need to use Universal Print?

    Dear GraniteStateColin

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand that you seem to be receiving errors related to the Universal Print . These errors occur after booting up and when manually starting the service, suggesting that the issue may be due to a missing or corrupted McpManagementService.dll file, which is a runtime library file related to remote printing in Universal Print.

You mentioned that you have tried running the DISM command for system repair. Did you encounter any errors while running that command?

Since you don't need the remote printing functionality, you can disable the service. However, if you want to fully resolve the issue, you can choose to replace the faulty McpManagementService.dll file with the correct version of the same file. There are two ways to obtain the correct McpManagementService.dll:

    1. Find the file on another computer that doesn't have the error: Go to \WINDOWS\System32\McpManagementService.dll, right-click on it, select Properties, and check the file version in the Details tab. If the file version matches the version on your computer, you can copy the correct McpManagementService.dll file from the other computer to replace the faulty file on your computer.
    2. Search online for someone sharing the file: Look for someone who is sharing the file online. Make sure to download a file that matches the version of the file on your computer.
You also mentioned that you downloaded the HP Universal Print driver and you want to understand the difference between that and the Universal Print in Windows. Universal Print technology is a cloud-based printing solution provided by Microsoft. It allows printing directly over the network without the need for local printer configuration. On the other hand, the HP Universal Print driver is specifically designed for HP printers and is required for local printer configuration when using HP printers.

If the problem is still not solved by the above steps, you can share the recent progress with me in the reply. I will work with you to try other possible solutions to resolve the problem.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and we look forward to your reply.
