Windows 10: Why can’t I use my mobile number for this account

I’ve made a new Microsoft account but I can use everything on it bar my mobile number and I was just wondering why I can’t use my mobile number? A friend of mine send I’ve used it to many times on different accounts so what shall I do?

Thanks for your suggestion, but this is a prepaid phone --- no contract. As I said T-Mobile lists the number under an unknown carrier and suggested I contact Microsoft.
