Windows 10: Upgrade a virtual machine to win 11

Good morning, I have a computer that does not meet the requirements for installing Windows 11 but I do not want to change it because it works very well. I thought about upgrading from win10 pro to win11 pro by virtualising the current hard disk with Hyper-V. I would like to proceed as follows: 1 With Disk2VHD I would create a complete copy of the disk with the VHDX extension. 2 I would buy a new Hard disk replacing the current one 3 I would buy a new Windos 10 pro license to install on the new disk and use it as a host 4 I would create a virtual machine that meets the Windows11 requirement

Upgraded virtual machine

Hi there

I found that this is not working. I installed my win 7 on a virtual machine and upgraded it to 10. I intended to extract the product key from the virtual machine to use for a clean install of my Dell. Win 10 did not activate with the extracted key and it
seemed that the product key was an generic key that every Virtual machine user was getting when they tried to extract the key.

I solved the upgrade problem with my Dell (connect main disk to SATA controller instead of RAID controller) and after the upgrade, my win 10 was activated

Installing a Virtual Machine in Windows 10

Step #1 is to decide which virtual machine software you wish to install.

The three most popular choices are:

• VirtualBox (from Oracle)
• VMWare Workstation Player (from VMWare); and
• Hyper-V (from Microsoft)

Once you've made your choice you can find detailed, illustrated instructions for installing each one on the internet.

As a personal suggestion: You might find it easier to use either VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation Player. Hyper-V is more complicated to setup.

Between VirtualBox and VMWare, I think you'll find VirtualBox more user-friendly, and it has the advantage of allowing you to create checkpoints - backups of your virtual machine - whereas to do that in VMWare you'll need to upgrade to their (expensive!)
paid version.

 

Upgraded virtual machine

Hi there

I wanted to upgrade my Dell Precision t3600 to windows 10. The upgrade failed (I asked questions about the error, but nobody seems to have a solution). So I thougt: If i install Windows 7 on a virtual machine with my Dell key and upgrade it to 10, then clean
install win 10 on my dell with a product key that I extracted from the registry from the virtual machine.

Now it seems that it is not possible to do the clean install after the activation on the virtual machine. Can I undo my upgrade, so that I can upgrade my Dell again?
