Windows 10: My external hard drive freezes and ejects itself when I try to move a folder to my desktop...

As I mentioned in the title, my external hard drive freezing and also freezing the entire file explorer when I try to open a folder inside of it, move a folder from external hard drive to desktop, basically it does not allow me to access any of my documents inside of it. To be more descriptive, I connect it to my PC via its own cable, file explorer shows up, search bar of file explorer seems to be loading the external drive, after some time, it freezes the file explorer completely, file explorer is not responding message pops up with "close the program and wait until it responds" selection box

Windows 10 Eject Button Missing for external hard drive

Why would, of all things, the eject button of a mounted external hard drive go missing? That's a Windows operating system for you. I'm using Explorer and right-clicking over the drive letter - but, no listing for ejecting the drive. Anyway, before I just rip out the USB cable of my external hard drive - is there a reasonable solution (that's under 25 nebulous steps) to just EJECT a freakin' hard drive plugged into Windows 10? Is it really necessary for every little thing in Windows to turn into a complicated procedure?

But, the option to format the external drive is in the menu.

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

External Hard Drive/New Volumn

Thank you for getting back to me and providing me with an update on the situation. I'm sorry to hear that you have already tried the steps that I recommended and are still experiencing issues with ejecting the external hard drive.

Regarding the screenshot you shared, I can see that there are two E volumes, which is unusual. It's possible that the issue is caused by a conflict between these volumes. You may want to try the following steps to troubleshoot this further:

> Disconnect the external hard drive and check if both E volumes disappear from the list.

> Reconnect the external hard drive and check if both E volumes reappear.

> Try ejecting the external hard drive using each of the E volumes and see if one consistently works better than the other.

> If one E volume consistently works better than the other, you can try renaming the other E volume to avoid confusion.

Regarding the set of numbers in the folder below the art folder, that is likely a folder used by the Windows Installer. It's not necessarily an indication that you need to redo Windows, but it's possible that there are some issues with your Windows installation that are contributing to the issue with your external hard drive.
