Mystery "Local Disk (EA Local Drive E: appeared after Windows 11 reinstall :) appears after Features Update 1803

    Hi,

I just installed the last Windows 10 Features Update, version 1803 (the one with Task View) and suddenly a Local Disk (EA Local Drive E: appeared after Windows 11 reinstall :) that was not there before has appeared in my computer.

Normally there would only be two drives listed in This PC: Windows (CA Local Drive E: appeared after Windows 11 reinstall :), which is a Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB, and a DVD/CD drive. That's all. But now after this update there is this E drive which is listed as nearly full: "39.9MB free of 508MB". In Disk Management
it appears listed as a OEM Partition (in addition to another OEM Partition, a 500MB "Recovery Disk")

If I run the Samsung Magician app, which I use to mantain my drive, this E drive is also listed there as a separate drive (whereas the other OEM partition, "Recovery", has never been listed there or in This PC)

Annoyingly, now a notification keeps popping up warning: "Low Disk Space. You are running out of disk space on Local Disk (EA Local Drive E: appeared after Windows 11 reinstall :). Click here to see if you can free space on this drive" But clicking there doesn't free anything.

I have tried running the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter, which innitially found a Restart pending. I restarted but drive E is still there. Running the Hardware or Updates troubleshooter again finds no issues.

How can I get rid of this drive E so that things are back to normal and I don't keep getting that notification?

A Local Drive E: appeared after Windows 11 reinstall

Local Disk E - Suddenly appeared, full and with no files.

This is a known issue in which the previously hidden recovery partition become visible. The solution is as follows

Although you can safely ignore these partitions, if you prefer do away with the low disk space warnings and hide the partitions so they no longer appear in File Explorer, you can do so by manually removing the partition’s assigned drive letter. To do this:

    1. In Cortana, type cmd and press Enter. Then right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.

    2. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type diskpart and press Enter.

    3. Type list volume and press Enter.

    4. Make note of the volume number for the drive letter you want to remove. For example, if the drive letter you want to remove is Drive “E”, note the volume number for Drive E.

    5. Type the following command, and press Enter.

    select volume <volume number>

When typing this command, in place of <volume number>, substitute the volume number you made note of in Step 4. In the example above, if the volume number for drive E 5, you would type: select volume 5

    6. Type the following command and press Enter.

    remove letter=<drive letter>

When typing this command, in place of <drive letter>, substitute the drive letter you want to remove. In this example, you would type: remove letter=E

    7. Close the Command Prompt window.

Note: your drive letter may not be E. Simply substitute your drive letter in place of E
