Windows Admin Center version 2007 now generally available

Windows Admin Center version 2007 is generally available today. In this release, we have made Windows Admin Center compatible with the new Azure Stack HCI, which required substantial updates to the cluster deployment experience and various tools across the product. Note that this release is pronounced as “twenty oh-seven” in regard to this year and month, and not in reference to the year 2007.

Windows Admin Center supports the new Azure Stack HCI

Today we announced the release of a new version of Azure Stack HCI for on-premises hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) clusters. This version is a subscription-based Azure service that combines the price-performance of our HCI solution with native Azure hybrid capabilities, all while letting enterprises leverage existing skills.

What’s new in Windows Admin Center

Cluster deployment

Windows Admin Center now provides a graphical cluster deployment workflow. The cluster deployment workflow allows users to deploy multiple cluster types based on the operating system that runs on their choice of servers.

New location and UI

To launch the workflow, from the All Connections page, click on “+Add” and select “Create new” on the server clusters tile.

Users can create hyperconverged clusters running Azure Stack HCI, or classic failover clusters running Windows Server.

The cluster deployment workflow is included in Windows Admin Center without needing to install an extension.

For the first time ever, use Windows Admin Center to deploy a cluster that’s stretched across two sites.

Workflow details

You can bring in your workgroup servers and get them domain-joined as part of the cluster deployment workflow.

Windows Admin Center detects the cluster type that is deployed and installs the necessary roles and features.

We support multiple network topologies to cater to different customer scenarios.

Windows Admin Center is working to provide an integrated firmware/driver update experience as part of deployment workflow.

User experience

New look

Windows Admin Center has some new color! We hope you like our new icons and the design changes we have made to make Windows Admin Center look more modern. Windows Admin Center has historically been tied to Windows Server, but now it has become its own independent product. While the license terms have been updated, this shouldn’t affect your usage of Windows Admin Center in any way.

Feedback

You can now let us know how we are doing from inside Windows Admin Center. Occasionally, you may receive a pop-up asking how likely you are to recommend Windows Admin Center to a coworker. Please provide your feedback as it will help us improve your experience.

Bug fixes and accessibility improvements

Schedule restarts in the Updates tool: We have fixed the bug where users could not schedule restarts in the Updates tool.

Connecting to Hyper-V servers: In the previous release, there was a bug that prevented connection to Hyper-V servers. That has been fixed.

Core tools

Active Directory

This release includes a new version, version 0.85.0, of the Active Directory tool based on all the feedback we received from User Voice! Some of the changes from the preview version include:

Search with more descriptive queries using PowerShell Expression Language syntax

filter by object type or run range-based queries

search for users with a password count over a certain threshold

More connected experience

Ability to unlock users

Containers

The Windows Admin Center containers extension has recently been updated. This extension is available through the Windows Admin Center Insiders feed (https://aka.ms/wac-insiders-feed).

Virtual Machines

Users are now able to click on a virtual machine and perform a full clone. You can run sysprep on the virtual machine beforehand or let us run it for you. Windows Admin Center brings in an optimized VM clone experience that significantly reduces user effort, time, and engagement needed for the process. This feature is in preview so please give us feedback.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) monitoring

The SDN monitoring extension now includes Data Path Diagnostics. This feature automates packet captures to diagnose networking data path issues in SDN scenarios. After you choose your SDN scenario and provide basic parameters, Windows Admin Center identifies the involved SDN components and their location in the cluster, sets the right packet filters, and captures network traffic on all the relevant machines. Afterwards, we present the captured logs in a single view that is easy to follow and manipulate through Windows Admin Center. This view allows you to download the logs for additional post-processing using your tool of choice.

Partner ecosystem

Windows Admin Center continues to promote an extensible ecosystem and we’re thrilled to collaborate with our external partners. Several of our partners have released updates for their extensions in the past few months that include bug fixes and improvements targeted at Windows Admin Center version 2007.

Lenovo XClarity Integrator version 2.1.11

The Lenovo XClarity Integrator for Windows Admin Center provides IT administrators a smooth and seamless management experience across Windows Server hyper-converged and physical infrastructure. In this release, improvements include:

New user role-based access control

Firmware update

Cluster-aware firmware update for clusters

Firmware update for Azure HCI clusters with the best recipe for ThinkAgile MX certified nodes, involving both firmware and Windows drivers

Support compliance policy-based firmware update

Disk Manager for ThinkAgile MX HCI cluster

Dell EMC OpenManage Integration version 1.1.0

The Dell EMC OpenManage Integration for Microsoft Admin Center extension enables IT administrators to manage Dell EMC PowerEdge servers as hosts, Microsoft Failover Clusters created with PowerEdge servers, and Azure Stack Hyper-Converged Infrastructure created with Dell EMC Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct Ready Nodes, AX Nodes. In this release, improvements include:

Added support for Dell EMC Online Catalogs

Ability to perform Server update including selective component updates

Cluster update—Premium licenses required for respective hardware, such as Dell EMC PowerEdge Server and Azure Stack HCI clusters based on AX nodes or Storage Spaces Direct Ready Nodes from Dell EMC

To locate physical disks or to identify failed physical disks, provision to blink and unblink the physical disks Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) is provided

The QCT Management Suite is designed to help users manage and monitor their Windows Server hyper-converged infrastructure and QCT system configuration information on a single dashboard. With the upgrade to version 2.1.0, fixes and additions include:

Network Adapter and Switch Port mapping.

PFC enable check of Switch.

Switch Port Status check.

Switch Environment Information includes Switch Model, Software Version, Serial Number, Device Name, Fan Status, Power Supply Unit Status.

Announcing Windows Admin Center Preview 1909

Hello Windows Insiders! Thanks for staying up to date on the Windows Admin Center journey! This release contains incremental changes and quality improvements for the new functionality released in the preceding previews. Specific updates to Packetmon, and a couple visual changes are described below.

This will be the last preview release in anticipation of the next generally available release of Windows Admin Center coming in the next two months.

Specific connection type for Azure VMs

In new Add connection experience, Azure VMs are now a top-level connection type. This functionality previously lived under the “Azure” tab when adding a server. When a server is added this way, it appears in the connections list as “Server (Azure VM)” so you can easily see which of your servers are Azure VMs.

Unified connection type for clusters

The two separate connection types for hyper-converged clusters and failover clusters have been merged into a single, unified connection type. Clusters can be added as a “Windows Server cluster” and the appropriate tools will be loaded and available, primarily based on whether Storage Spaces Direct is enabled or not. Hyper-converged cluster connections and failover cluster connections added from previous versions of Windows Admin Center will be automatically migrated to the new cluster connection type.

For extension developers: Extensions that enable tools for failover cluster connections and/or hyper-converged cluster connections will require a minor code change to display the tools properly in the new cluster connection. Details on this will be provided soon.

Packetmon

There are several improvements in Packetmon:

New capture dialog wizard – users need to follow several steps to set the capture conditions: select specific components, set filters, choose dropped or all packets

Capture conditions button – opens a dialog which shows the conditions used to create the capture

Restart button – reuse same conditions to restart capture

Display filters dialog – further filter captured results

Save button – save the captured log in different formats

Packet details page now shows actual names of networking stack components

Partner extensions

The Windows Admin Center ecosystem continues to grow with the recent release of several partner extensions.

IIS extension

We are excited to announce the first preview release of the IIS Extension for Windows Admin Center that provides the existing tools in IIS manager to administer and manage your web server. You can download and install the “msft.iis.iis-management” extension from the extension feed and If you are connecting to a machine to manage IIS for the first time, you will be prompted to install the IIS Administration API on the machine you wish to manage.

Lenovo XClarity Integrator extension is generally available

The Lenovo XClarity Integrator extension is now generally available with the v1.2.11 release. In addition to the existing capabilities to manage standalone servers and hyper-converged clusters, the following features have been added in this release:

In-band management for hardware inventory, events and alerts – Servers can be managed via PowerShell running in Windows Server. This allows server hardware management without the Lenovo XClarity Administrator.

Support for Lenovo XClarity Administrator version 2.5.0 for out-of-band management.

BiitOps Changes extension for server configuration change tracking

The BiitOps Changes extension is now officially available for customers. BiitOps Changes makes identifying and troubleshooting server incidents through Windows Admin Center an even quicker and simpler process through a powerful graphical change overview. Key features include:

Summarizes changes made to servers and/or services leading up to an incident

Shows changes – and changes only – in a simple, yet powerful graphical interface

Allows admins to quickly zoom in on specific changes for full details

Simple one-time installation, configuration and deployment for 24/7/365 monitoring

Highly secure with no data ever being passed from your local installation

Offered as a free trial for up to 10 servers

Known issues

Dell EMC extension – The Dell EMC OpenManage Integration extension is not compatible with Windows Admin Center v1909 due to a breaking change in this version and will fail to install. Dell EMC will be releasing a new version soon. In the meantime, you can continue to use the Dell EMC extension on Windows Admin Center v1904.1 or v1908.

Cluster connections – When adding a cluster connection, there is reference to creating a new cluster, however this functionality is not yet available. [23380016]

Azure Monitor onboarding – If you’re managing a server or a cluster using “manage as” credentials, the onboarding may fail.

Network – If you have configured an Azure Network Adapter, the value under Microsoft Azure Virtual Network Gateway Address will be formatted as a hyperlink but leads to an invalid address. [20420185]

Chrome users may see 403 Forbidden response from WAC after upgrading. The workaround is to close *all* open chrome tabs (make sure there are no chrome.exe processes running). After restarting chrome, everything will function normally. We have an error message that makes this clear, but chrome users with multiple windows admin center tabs open during upgrade will not see the message.

Announcing Windows Admin Center Preview 2012

Author’s note: I am publishing this blog post on behalf of the Windows Admin Center Team.

Happy New Year from the Windows Admin Center Team! We’re excited to bring you the first look at our newest features as we start fresh in the new year. Thanks for your continued interest and support. In this release, we made several platform and performance updates and added a new step to the cluster create wizard. We strongly recommend that you use this build for deploying clusters.

Platform updates

Significant improvements were made to address the Azure login issues from the last release. Azure login should be much more reliable moving forward.
Improvements were made to the Extension Manager, including fixes for access denied errors.

Significant performance improvements: We’re dedicated to improving performance across the product. Most notably, this release includes an upgrade to HTTP/2.
Accessibility improvements throughout the product.

Several of our core Windows Admin Center tools have received updates since our 2009 release.

Azure File Sync: A much more reliable experience has come to Azure File Sync.

Files and File sharing: Bug fixes and a UNC copy-paste to the dashboard

Cluster Manager: You can now register your Azure Stack HCI cluster to Azure and change your diagnostic data settings right from within Windows Admin Center.

Storage Migration: UI updates and support for several new features released with the October 2020 Storage Migration Service cumulative update.

Storage replica: You can now view the replication status next to the status icon in the partnerships table. There were also several bug fixes.

System Insights: now available for Azure Stack HCI!

Virtual Machines:

New “Isolation mode” in the networking section when creating a new VM.

Improved SDN networking for VMs.

Bug fixes and minor performance improvements.

Windows Update: This release fixed a bug where scheduled restarts were happening immediately, even if they were not scheduled to do so.

New GPU tool

Windows Admin Center has a new tool to manage and Discrete Device Assign (DDA) GPUs to virtual machines running on your server. This is one of the first UIs to manage your GPUs, so we’re very excited for all of you to try it out and give us feedback. This new tool is only available if you are running Azure Stack HCI. Navigate to the end of the blog for directions on how to install.

Secured-core capabilities

We are lighting up your secured-core server capabilities in the Security tool of WAC. Follow the instructions at the end of this blog to get the latest extension.

Cluster creation tool is now generally available

RDMA support

RDMA provisioning is now a part of the deployment flow. Azure Stack HCI customers can fully leverage RDMA capable network adapters using the latest cluster-creation extension in Windows Admin Center. The workflow automatically discovers the supported protocol (iWARP or RoCE V2) and guides with recommended settings for bandwidth and traffic priority.

Stretch Cluster

Azure Stack HCI stretch clusters provide a solution for disaster recovery with automatic failover. This release of cluster-creation enables to choose to deploy single-site or multi-site/stretch cluster. The wizard flow provides network configuration options and runs required network connectivity tests to validate user inputs before performing the new cluster creation. The wizard also has in-built ingenuity to auto-assign sites based on AD site provisioning.

Integrated solutions updates

Azure Stack HCI is supported on a broad range of vendor systems and is available through Microsoft’s rich selection of partners and system integrators (SIs). Windows Admin Center provides further integrated solutions through OEM extensions within the cluster deployment flow. This allows Azure Stack HCI customers to not only be up to date with OS updates but also the curated firmware/driver updates from respective OEMs based on make and model of Azure Stack HCI nodes. This will simplify the deployment of full-stack updates across your Azure Stack HCI cluster infrastructure.

If you have Dell hardware or are looking to use Azure Stack HCI Cluster Create, please download this build to experience the latest updates to snap-in extensions for Windows Admin Center. This build is available for customer’s production use. It will be supported until the next release.

Secret feature

This is not included in this release yet, but we have a hidden feature for all of you. Each of the tools in Windows Admin Center can now “pop out” by hovering on the tool and be managed in a pop-up window.

How do you enable this?

Go to the Settings gear icon in the top right corner of Windows Admin Center.

Under Development, go to

Under Experimental Keys, select Add and enter sme.shell.popouts.

Select Save and Reload and it will be enabled!

Installing Insiders extensions

If you’re interested in trying out any of the new extensions mentioned above, follow these instructions:
