    Optimize My External Hard Drive


    Last 2 days I have been optimizing one of my external hard drives.When it was finished the drive was missing from the optimization window.It was also missing from Windows Explorer My PC window.What is going on?How do I get the PC to recognize the external hard drive?SheilahO/SWindows 10 Home verison 2009O/S Build 19045.5965

    Optime Drive - Doesn't Recognize External Hard Drive

    When I Select "Defragment and Optimize Drives" my external USB 3.0 hard drive is not among the drives listed that can be analyzed or optimized. The reply to another similar post suggested reading and following the recommendations in a separate
    article "Optimize Windows for better performance" which I did but found no useful information there. Any other suggestions
    or alternatives?

    Hi John,

    We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

    • Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
    • Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.
    The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

    External hard drive not recognised

    Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.
