Windows 10: File Explorer error message: "the folder or a file in it is open...."

I am forever getting the message "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program" when trying to move files or folders in File Explorer, but half the time I can't find any related file or folder open. Frustrating as heck. Why can't File Explorer provide the name of the problem file/folder instead of leaving us to guess or paw through windows on the desktop? For that matter, why can't we just move or rename files/folders while they're open, like you can on a Mac? They're just pointers, people!

Double-clicking on a folder in File Explorer gives an error message.

When I double-click on a folder in File Explorer (Windows 10), I get an error message: "This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page". When I click the "Open" button on the top center of the ribbon, I get the same message. When I right-click on the folder, I see "Explore" on the top of the list, with "Open" beneath it. The Explore command seems to do no good, I have to click on Open to open the folder. Is there any way I can modify this so that when I double-click on a folder in File Explorer, it opens?

As a side note, when I right click a folder on the desktop screen, it does open.

 

File Explorer Error

Hello,Recently I'm getting error messages in windows file explorer after deleting or moving folders, they are still in the list. But pointing at them, get this error message, see attached screen shot. Have to restart the file explorer in Task Manager.Answers will be appreciated.Thanks

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
