Windows 10: serial RS-232 to USB-A adaptor cable and serial mouse

I have an old Logitech roller ball mouse with a RS-232 female connector. I would like to continue to use it, as I like the roller ball functionality. I know it is oldAnyway, when doing some research, with AI, it brought up the following issue. "While the adapter will provide the correct physical and protocol connection, Windows 11 itself may not natively support serial mice, as native support was removed in recent versions of Windows. The adapter will install and create a COM port, but your mouse may not function as a pointing device unless you use third-party software or legacy drivers tha

RS-232 not working on windows 10

Currently I have a simple working windows form application running on windows 7 embedded that talks serially with a scanner. I wish to switch over to windows 10 ioT platform and be
able to run the same application on windows 10 ioT enterprise (Build version 14393 ). As I tried running the same application on windows 10 ioT, the pc hangs up as soon as I try to open a serial port to start communication. To try identifying the issue,
I do have a try catch around serialport.Open() and I don't see any exceptions. The windows 10 PC just hangs up as it executes serialport.Open(). Now if I unplug the RS232 cable while its hung up, it returns
back its normal operation.

However I am able to establish serial communication using a USB to RS-232 cable instead of using a COM Port on the PC using the same win form application. Does win form applications
using serial port class not work on win 10 for RS232 communication?

Further, a tried running a sample UWP serial application here ,
which still did not detect any scanners connected over RS-232 but was able to connect a USB to RS-232 device. Is RS-232 communication not supported on windows 10 iot ? Is there anything that I am missing ?

 

Serial Mouse via USB not detected


Hi,

I have just installed Windows 10 and my mouse no longer works. Its a specific adapted mouse (for disability) that connects via Serial (9-pin) into a Serial-USB converter cable. The converter cable gets detected ok (as Prolific Serial-USB Adapter) but the Serial mouse running on the end of it doesn't work/get detected.

In Windows 7 it works fine and needed no addition drivers other than the the Prolific adapter. Can I tell if Windows is detecting its presence? Any suggestions?

Yes, you may need to install a serial to USB driver on your computer in order for it to recognize the device. Here are some steps that may help:

• Make sure that the serial to USB cable is connected properly between the modbus slave device and your computer.
  
• Go to the website of the manufacturer of the cable and look for the driver download page. Download the driver that corresponds to your operating system.
  
• Once the driver is downloaded, run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  
• After the installation is complete, restart your computer.
  
• Open Device Manager by searching for it in the Start Menu.
  
• Look for the "Ports (COM & LPT)" section and expand it.
  
• Your serial to USB device should be listed here with a COM port number assigned to it.
  

If you do not see the device listed after installing the driver, try unplugging and plugging the cable back in or using a different USB port on your computer. If the problem persists, contact the manufacturer of the cable for further assistance.
