Windows 10: Media Player not playing video or opening pictures all of a sudden

Media Player all of a sudden won’t play videos or open pictures. I’ve updated media player, uninstalled and re-installed. I’ve tried to select "Download codecs automatically“ in media player but that option is not under the “Player” tab. Any suggestions?

Windows Media Player ruining my pictures and videos

Hi Greg,

I have been using Windows Media Player Legacy to open pictures and videos for years now. I have never seen "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file" message in the past years. Recently it is happening a lot.

As you mentioned I have defaulted the picture viewer to Photo App. It doesn't open the damaged images.

I found Windows Media Player Legacy (this is what I was using in the past for pics and videos) and Media Player. Should I pick the Media Player for the videos?

I will be monitoring my pictures from now on with the Photo App. Hopefully it won't ruin my existing pictures.

Windows Media Player not working for videos

The problem is Windows Media Player wont work at all. When I try to play a video clip I get the message: "Browser has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is
available."

I tried the fix you suggested involved going into Device Manager, Sound video and game controller then looking for updates for the 2 audio drivers available:

• ATI HDMI Audio and
• Realtek High Definition Audio

but the problem remains.

However, I can open the video files using Windows Live Movie Maker; picture and sound are ok, though the picture is limited in size.

  Do you receive any error when trying to play the videos in Media Player?

  Do you receive any error when trying to watch the videos in Edge?
  

For video issue in Edge, I suggest you to check if Adobe flash player is enabled. Refer to the article below:
