Windows 10: XBOX games will not work on PC unless they are up to date on XBOX Console as well

I have the Forza Horizon 5 game on Xbox console & also installed on my PC, but the Xbox console stopped working and now the PC version of the game won't work. This seems to be a thing with play anywhere games that they don't tell you, & it has happened with this game before. But previously all I had to do was run the Xbox console version of Horizon 5 & then the PC version would work again.The PC version needs to be able sync data with the Xbox console version every so often or it will not run Play Anywhere on the PC.Why is this?

Today, we at Team Xbox are excited to talk about Xbox Console Streaming, our new system feature that lets you play your Xbox One games from your console on a mobile device.

If you’re an Xbox Insider in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings in the US and UK, you can now try a preview of Xbox Console Streaming. You’ll be able to play your owned and installed Xbox One games, including Xbox Game Pass titles, on an Android phone or tablet remotely from your home console.

Our vision at Xbox is to empower you to play Xbox games where you want, when you want. Whether you’ve got just a few minutes to complete a race in Forza, or find yourself with an hour to get some online multiplayer in before the next train arrives, console streaming allows you to play your games on the go.

We set out on this vision for game streaming earlier this month by beginning the public preview of Project xCloud, allowing you to play games directly from the cloud. And now we’re delivering on our second streaming option by kicking off the preview of Console Streaming so you can remotely play your full Xbox One library from your own Xbox.

I’ve been spending a lot of time testing Xbox Console Streaming through our internal employee takehome program, spending lunch breaks playing through Slay the Spire. I love being able to game during these moments so I can always stay in touch with my gaming community and make progress through stories that were traditionally tied to my living room. I’m excited for Insiders to experience this for themselves.

This preview is an important step in our journey to deliver game streaming to Xbox players around the world. We’ll work closely with you and the Insider community to gather feedback that will shape and define future iterations of Xbox Console Streaming.

As we learn more from all of you and continue to improve the experience, we’ll open Xbox Console Streaming to more Insider rings and expand to additional regions. Stay tuned for updates.

Xbox Console Streaming (Preview): What you need to know

Here’s what you need to know and can expect from Xbox Console Streaming (Preview):

You need to be an Xbox Insider in the US and UK with a console enrolled in the Alpha or Alpha-Skip-Ahead rings to participate in the preview.

We will expand the preview to more rings and regions in the future. If you’re interested in joining the Xbox Insider program, you can find more information here.

To participate in the Xbox Console Streaming preview, Insiders need:

A phone or tablet running Android 6.0 or higher, with Bluetooth 4.0.

A Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One Wireless Controller.

While not required, we recommend a controller mount for those gamers testing on a phone.

Download the Xbox Game Streaming (Preview) app from the Google Play Store:

The app will guide you through setting up Xbox Console Streaming on your enrolled Xbox One, including performing a test to ensure your home network, console and controller are ready for Xbox Console Streaming:

The network test ensures your console’s network connection and setup meet the minimum requirements:

NAT type: Open or Moderate

Upstream bandwidth: At least 4.75 Mbps required, 9 Mbps preferred

Network latency: 125 ms or less required, 60 ms or less preferred

Console settings: Power setting must be Instant-on

Xbox Console Companion not working

Hello OathDragon,

Thank you for your prompt response.

As mentioned, that Xbox Console Companion app is moving to Xbox app for Windows. Make use of the Xbox app for Windows to play games. All you need to do is sign in your Microsoft account that you use for your Xbox account and make sure to sign in too in Microsoft Store. With your concern on how to stream or remote play your Xbox Console using the Windows device, here are the steps:

1. First, enable the Sleep power option and remote features on your console.

Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.

Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Remote features.

Select the Enable remote features checkbox.

Under Power options, select Sleep.

Note If your console power mode isn’t set to Sleep, remote play won’t work.

2. Set up your Windows device for remote play

Open the Xbox app for Windows.

Select the Consoles icon next to the search box.

Select the desired console you want to connect to.

Things to keep in mind:

It's a good idea to save frequently while playing remotely. If you get disconnected from your console, you could lose progress in your game.

If you close the app or do something else on your phone after starting your remote play session, you won't immediately lose your progress. After a period of time, your console will turn off and go to sleep. You can reconnect your session until the console turns off.

Only one person at a time can play remotely, even if others are set up to connect remotely or locally.

Microsoft Store and in-game purchases, and backward compatibility, are disabled during remote play with the Xbox mobile apps.

3. Pair a controller to your device

App Compatibility for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S Consoles

UWP applications (both apps and games) are a pivotal part of the Xbox experience. As we near the launch of the new console generation, we want to address some common questions regarding app and game development on the new Xbox family of consoles. If you have been developing for the Xbox One X using UWP and leveraging the Dev Mode Activation App, the same features will be supported on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Will my current UWP app or game continue running on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

Yes, apps and games running on the Xbox One should continue to run at parity on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The underlying platform APIs and codecs that UWP apps are built on have been tested and validated with key scenarios by Microsoft and through thousands of hours of usage in our internal Xbox flighting program. These APIs and codes are supported on the new Xbox family of consoles. When the new Xbox family of consoles is released, we recommend doing additional validation of your UWP app or game on the chosen device if desired.

How can I verify that my UWP app or game is working on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

Devkits are not publicly available. UWP application developers should continue to rely on the Dev Mode Activation App used on the Xbox One X to convert their retails consoles into a development kit to test for compatibility As the same APIs and codecs are used between the Xbox One X and the new Xbox family of consoles, an app that works on the Xbox One X should continue to work on the new Xbox family of consoles

When the new Xbox family of consoles are available in retail, app partners can rely on Dev Mode Activation App to convert those consoles into a development kit.

Do I need to change or rewrite my application from the current UWP application?

No app development changes are required for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. You use the same SDK, build environments, and UWP APIs to develop your applications. The same publishing process for UWPs on the Xbox One will continue to apply for the new Xbox family of consoles.

Are there any features my app can take advantage of for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

We focused our efforts on backwards compatibility for apps on our new Xbox family of consoles to make it easier for our partners and enable a seamless transition for your app from the Xbox One generation to the next generation of Xbox consoles. This means that all of your favorite apps will carry over to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on day 1.

We currently do not have additional features for apps on the new Xbox family of consoles that are not already a part of the Xbox One X.

Will I need to sign a new agreement to bring my Xbox One UWP application to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

No, the existing Store App Developer Agreement terms will continue to cover distribution for apps on the new Xbox family of consoles. No additional agreements are required to run your app on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Will my app show that it supports the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on the Store?

Yes, Microsoft will list the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as a platform on the Store PDP. No additional work is required from the app partner to add in Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S listing to the Store
