We take a closer look at Notepad's formatting options

Last week, I reported that Microsoft has brought new formatting options for Notepad. Let's take a closer look at how the features work.

I'm on the same app version as I was a week ago, which is Notepad 11.2504.62.0. So, I guess it just randomly activated the features for me. I'm pretty sure I didn't notice the formatting bar this morning when I opened Notepad, and it has stayed open. But it was there when I alt-tabbed to it about an hour ago. Sorcery!

When the formatting options are available, you will see the bar appear at the top of the screen. Notepad also displays an introduction for the features which include formatting text into bold, italics styling, Markdown syntax.

Type something, and then click on Bold or Italics to stylize your text. You can also use keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl + B, Ctrl + I for the same. Add a clickable hyperlink (URL) with Ctrl + K, you'll need to Ctrl + click to open the web page.

To clear the formatting, just hit the button in the far right edge of the toolbar, or press Ctrl + Space. Alternatively, you can use the Clear Formatting option under the Edit menu.

You can't copy and paste formatted text from one tab (document) to another in Notepad. Why wouldn't this work? I assumed the copy and paste feature is still restricted to plain text. Or is it? No, it is not. Pasting formatted text into a new blank Notepad tab will just result in plain text, but, if you type something and make the slightest change to it, it pastes the content properly. For example, type anything, and change it to bold or italics. Now paste the text, and it'll paste the formatted version. This seems a little weird to me, but I think Notepad activates formatting on a per-document/tab basis, and by default the formatting is disabled. Oh, and I was able to paste the formatted text into LibreOffice Writer, and it worked just fine.

Check Notepad's status bar, it changes between plain text and formatted to indicate the style of the document. You can click on the status to switch between formatted and Markdown view.

When you save a document that contains formatted text, Notepad warns you to save the file in .md format to retain the formatting, and that saving it as a plain text document (.TXT) will result in loss of the formatting.

Not a fan of formatting options? Head to Notepad's Settings and disabled Formatting.

These improvements make Notepad a fairly modern text editor.

What do you think about the new features? Yay, or nay?
