Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 will receive updates until 2028

Windows 10 users will be able to continue to use Microsoft Edge for a few more years after the operating system reaches its end of support. Microsoft says it will update its Windows 10 browser for until 2028.

By now, you're probably well aware of the fact that Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. You may choose to extend security updates for the OS, which turned 10 years old last month.

But if you were worried that Microsoft Edge wouldn't receive updates beyond the said date, you can rest assured now. A support page on the Redmond company's website says that Microsoft Edge a will continue to receive updates on Windows 10 22H2 until at least October 2028. That's three years beyond the end of support date for the OS, which is impressive. The web page also mentions that the Microsoft WebView2 Runtime will be updated for the same duration. You may recall that WhatsApp Desktop is switching to a web wrapper version, well, it uses Microsoft WebView2 Runtime. So even third-party apps like this will continue to get updates.

The best part is that users do not need to enroll into the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program to continue receiving Microsoft Edge or WebView2 Runtime updates.

Google has not announced an end of support date for Chrome on Windows 10 yet, the browser is expected to be supported for a few years. Brave, Vivaldi and Opera on Windows 10 will also be supported for the foreseeable future, but their fates will ultimately depend on how long Chromium is supported on the operating system. Mozilla has already announced that Firefox release channel will continue to support Windows 10 for a few years. As a matter of fact, Firefox 115 ESR is still supported on Windows 7, and 8.1. Mozilla will reevaluate the situation for the older operating systems soon.

NVIDIA plans to end support for graphics drivers on Windows 10 in October 2026.

Windows 10 users who cannot upgrade to Windows 11, what is your plan?

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.

Microsoft to push automatic Windows 10 upgrades in 2016

"Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be automatically rolled out next year to all users of its older operating systems who have selected to receive updates.

Until now, users of Windows 7 and 8 have needed to register to upgrade to Windows 10. But that's about to change: soon the OS will be listed as an 'Optional Update' and -- from 2016 -- a 'recommended' update that will automatically install itself, if users have opted to receive updates in that way.*Shadedshun :shadedshu:

You can opt out of automatic updates to avoid this, but Microsoftsays that "we strongly discourage this in today’s connected world because of the constant risk of internet threats". You can also change your Windows Update settings to install critical updates but not recommended ones. Although it's still going to be possible to avoid installation, Microsoft seems quite determined for everyone to be using Windows 10 in near future.

The roll-out of reserved updates was initially staggered but, according to Microsoft, now Windows "will automatically kick off the upgrade process once you have made a reservation".

As an intermediate stage, Microsoft says that it will "soon" publish Windows 10 as an optional update, not installed by default, but accessible to all users.
