Two new Windows applications, People and File Search, leaked last year. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced the apps officially in a post on the Tech Community website and unveiled some technical details.

The main purpose of the "companion apps" is to keep users focused on completing tasks quickly and effectively. The People app, for example, sits on the taskbar of the operating system. It allows you to access profile cards and organizational charts with just a few clicks, send messages, or search for people.

File Search, as the name suggests, helps users find and share files faster. It supports finding files without specifying a file name and preview files before they are shared.

Recently, Microsoft revealed that Calendar is another companion app for Microsoft 365 that it plans to launch.

Windows 11-only




Microsoft lists the requirements of the new companion applications on its Learn website. Currently, the Microsoft 365 companion apps are available for users who:

• Joined the Microsoft 365 Insider Program for Business.
• Have Microsoft 365 desktop apps installed.
• Run Windows 11.

It seems likely that Microsoft will launch companion apps for Microsoft 365 Business or Enterprise only. While home users would benefit from some of the apps, File Search comes to mind, they may have less-use for the People or Calendar app. Microsoft has yet to reveal additional companion apps that it hinted at.

The applications are rolling out automatically on systems that meet the requirements, according to a new entry on the Microsoft 365 roadmap. There, Microsoft writes: "Microsoft 365 companions is a suite of apps, including People, File Search, and Calendar, designed to enhance productivity through quick access to key tools directly from the Windows 11 taskbar. These lightweight apps integrate seamlessly with Microsoft 365, allowing users to efficiently look up contacts and navigate organization charts, locate files, view calendars and streamline workflows without distractions.".

Microsoft confirmed earlier that the companion applications will install automatically on supported systems. Administrators may opt-out to prevent the installation. This is done via the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center. There, administrators need to visit Customization > Device Configuration > Modern Apps Settings and uncheck "Enable automatic installation of Microsoft 365 companion apps" after selecting Microsoft 365 companion apps (preview).

This prevents the installation on devices, but won't remove companion apps that were installed previously already. Users may disable the automatic start-up of the applications or pin/unpin apps as they see fit.

Microsoft Releases Office 365 Home Premium

Microsoft Corp. today announced worldwide availability of Office 365 Home Premium, a reinvention of the company's flagship Office product line for consumers. Office 365 Home Premium is a cloud service designed for busy households and people juggling ever-increasing work and family responsibilities.

The new offering includes the latest and most complete set of Office applications; works across up to five devices, including Windows tablets, PCs and Macs; and comes with extra SkyDrive storage and Skype calling -- all for US$99.99 for an annual subscription, the equivalent of US$8.34 per month.

Simultaneously, Microsoft today released Office 365 University for college or university students, faculty and staff at a price of just US$79.99 for a four-year subscription -- the equivalent of US$1.67 per month. Globally, the company also released updated versions of the traditional Office suite: Office Home and Student 2013, Office Home and Business 2013 and Office Professional 2013. Office 365 for businesses will be released globally with new capabilities on Feb. 27.

Time to Do the Things You Want
In a recent global survey, nearly 60 percent of people said they don't have the time to do the things they want to do, and more than 80 percent said they could save one or more hours a day if they were better organized. Office 365 Home Premium is designed to help people be more productive from virtually anywhere and find the flexibility to do the things they want.
