Windows 11's Snipping Tool video recorder is finally getting a missing feature (but it...

Microsoft has updated the screen capturing app several times in the past years to increase its functionality. Back in 2022, Microsoft added video capturing functionality. One year later, text recognition got added. This year, Microsoft added a perfect screenshot mode to the app, that promises to let you take better screenshots.

The latest test version of the Snipping Tool supports yet another feature, one that has been sorely missing from the app ever since Microsoft introduced support for capturing video: the ability to capture a program window.

Up until now, your only option was to draw a rectangle on the screen to record everything that happens inside. It is a useful feature, but it is not very versatile, as you can't modify the size of the recording area nor move it around after you have activated the start capture button.

The Snipping Tool update to version 11.2507.14.0 changes that. Microsoft is testing a new feature that you may use to pick a window for capturing. That is useful primarily for selecting a window for recording at this point, as the update is not introducing options to move the recording area with the window.

Means: you are still stuck with the initial dimensions. If you change the size of the window or move it elsewhere, it won't be recorded anymore still.

While that is a letdown, it is still making things a tad easier for users who use the Snipping Tool to record videos. There is also a chance that Microsoft is going to add the functionality at a later point in time.

Microsoft, for unknown reasons, continues to limit tests even in Canary or Beta builds. You may not get the updated Snipping Tool right away, even if you run the latest Insider build. Our colleagues over at Deskmodder have discovered a way to get it right away, even on stable versions of Windows.

Here is what you need to do:

    1. Visit the Adguard Store website.
    2. Switch the form to ProductID.
    3. Paste 9mz95kl8mr0l into the search field.
    4. Switch the third field from RP to Fast.
    5. Activate the checkmark button.
    6. Download Microsoft.ScreenSketch_2022.2507.14.0 .msixbundle.
    7. Double-click on the file after download and install the upgrade.

It is possible that the new option is available immediately. If it is not, you may need to make a change to the Registry next to that. I have created a Registry file that you need to execute on the system. Restart the PC afterwards, and the new feature should be available. Here is the file: snip

However, if you don't want to wait for this to happen, you may check out alternatives. My favorite app, PicPick, free for non-commercial use, supports video captures as well. It offers superior functionality, enabling you to make a few extra selections, such as the ability to record or block sound or the cursor. Plus, you get a button to record the entire screen immediately.

Now You: what is your video capturing or screen capturing tool? Do you use the Windows-included Snipping Tool or prefer a different program for that?

  2. Record sound with video using snipping tool.

Hello, I'm Greg, here to help you with this.

Snipping tool cannot do anything except save page snips. To screen record from Windows 11 there are options here:

Let me know if you have any questions or I can help performing any of the above steps. If you'll post back detailed results on each step in each tutorial, it will help me determine what else needs to be tried.
