Windows 10: Microsoft breaks Media Creation Tool days before end of support

Windows 10 users have just a day left to make a decision regarding the future of their device. Microsoft is ending support for the operating system on Tuesday. Probably the best option at this stage is to subscribe to extended security updates to extend support by a year for consumer devices.

However, some users may prefer to upgrade to Windows 11, especially if their device meets the operating system's requirements.

This can be done in the Settings application via Update & Security usually, but some users may prefer to use the Media Creation Tool instead.

What is it? The Media Creation Tool is an official software by Microsoft that can create bootable USB or DVD media to install or upgrade Windows.

Microsoft update broke the Media Creation Tool

Microsoft confirmed on October 10th that the tool may "not work as expected" when run on Windows 10 devices. The program may "close unexpectedly" and may not even display an error message when doing so.

Microsoft says that this issue affects the very latest version of the tool, which it released on September 29, 2025.

The company is working on a resolution, but it did not provide a timeline. The update "will be released in a future update to the Windows 11 media creation tool" according to the announcement.

Affected users may download a Windows disk image directly from Microsoft at the meantime to upgrade or use it as a workaround, suggests Microsoft. This is not as comfortable, as the ISO needs to be moved to a USB device using another tool or burned to DVD manually in that case.

    The better workaround: Rufus

You may want to use the open source tool Rufus instead. It is the better tool anyway. Rufus offers similar functionality as Microsoft's official program. You can use it to create bootable USB media. It supports downloading Windows 10 or Windows 11 from Microsoft, and you can pick the version that you want to download.

That is good news for users who want to upgrade to an earlier version of Windows 11 first and not the very latest that Microsoft released.

Rufus supports extra features, like bypassing certain system requirement checks when installing or upgrading Windows 11. Ideal for upgrading a Windows 10 system that does not meet the requirements.

In any case, I recommend creating a full system backup of the system partition before you start the upgrade.

Now You: Do you still use Windows 10 on your PC or have you moved on? If you still do, what are your plans going forward? Feel free to leave a comment down below.

  2. Media Creation Tool question

Hi, I have never had any problems using the Media Creation Tool to perform a Windows 10 clean installation until yesterday so I have a couple of questions.
    1. The tutorial here says after going to the Microsoft site and selecting the Download Tool (Media Creation Tool) option that the Media Creation Tool should be save to the PC and run from there.
On Microsoft site the instructions are to Download the Tool and select Run (no saving to the PC). Is there a reason for saving it to the PC first as suggested on Tenforums?

    2. Yesterday I used the Media Creation Tool to do a clean install. Everything went fine with the download. After the two hour download the Media Creation Tool automatically started to create the media. Everything working normally so far..then suddenly at 50% a screen popped up with an unexpected error message Error code beginning 0x80004005. That was it I had to stop there.
After searching the net it seems that other people have had the same issue after the Fall Creators Update...with the installation stopping at 50%. I have no idea how to sort this out. After contacting Microsoft Chat Support they didn't offer any suggestions that worked either.
    Can anyone advise please
    Many Thanks

media Creation Tool error at the end!

Hello! I migrated the OS from an ssd to an other. It works perfectly. Only a little problem when i start my PC, windows load so low with a black background and a point-circle loading animated image.

I tried to upgrade, keeping all apps/datas with Media Creation Tool, but at the end, after downloading all, when it tries to start installationg, at the last steps, gives the error:: "Media Creation Tool can't know if the space
available is enough to install windows 10". And it closes the installation tool! I need more then 2 hours to download all it needs! And now i need to restart downloading from 0! (in the ssd C:, where the OS is placed, there are more then 700 NTFS availabe
Gigabytes) why it does give error?!?!?!??!?!?!??!!

Problems upgrading to Windows 10 with the Media Creation Tool.

    Hi Abel,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am sorry to know that you are facing issues with Windows 10.

I do appreciate your efforts and time, and will assist you with the issue.

To guide you in the right direction, I need more information from the computer by answering the following questions:

    • What is the make and model of your computer?

    • Which operating system are you currently running on your computer?

    • Is you’re your anti-virus utility software disabled?

Your reply is very important for us to ensure a proper resolution.

Meanwhile I suggest you to try the steps provided below and
    check if it helps.

    Method 1

    Perform a clean boot.

A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows
10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot.

    Clean Boot:

    Notes

    • You must log on to the computer as an administrator to be able to perform a clean boot.

    • Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality when you perform a clean boot. When you start the computer normally, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or
experience the original behavior if the problem still exists.

    • If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to change the advanced
boot options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable.
I suggest you to try the steps provided in the link below, in order to perform a clean boot on your computer.

I also suggest you to refer to the link below for more information about downloading Media Creation Tool.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.
