Windows 10 now directly upgrades to Windows 11 25H2, as Microsoft pitches AI-powered...

Windows 10 now directly installs Windows 11 25H2, rather than version 24H2 or 23H2, if you choose to upgrade instead of opting for Extended Security Updates (ESU). This move also confirms that Microsoft has released Windows 11 25H2 for more users. And that makes sense, given the operating system has been available for about two months now.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, but it still remains supported if you opt for Extended Security Updates (ESU). ESU is not rocket science, as it just requires you to link a Microsoft account. At the same time, ESU does not mean Microsoft wants you to stay on Windows 10 and avoid Windows 11.

I opted for ESU (Extended Security Updates), and Windows Update is now showing me an alert to try Windows 11 25H2. But I am not being forced to upgrade to Windows 11. If I select ‘Download and install,’ only then does Windows begin downloading Windows 11 2025 Update.

I also noticed that when I booted Windows 10, it briefly displayed a new pop-up that covered half of the screen with a bloom wallpaper on the left side. On the right, there is a header that reads “Upgrade your PC for free,” warning that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

“To keep your device secure, improve performance, and access new features, upgrade to Windows 11 today,” the warning reads. When I selected Upgrade Now, Windows started downloading Windows 11 25H2 directly.

It’s quite obvious that Microsoft now offers version 25H2 irrespective of how you choose to upgrade from Windows 10, and it’s a good thing if you ask me. Windows 11 25H2 is stable, has fewer issues, and Microsoft says it has fixed most of the problems, including a recent bug where DRM-protected content would not work.

At the same time, I’ve noticed a pattern that these full-screen Windows 10 end-of-life pop-ups do not offer the option to sign up for Extended Security Updates (ESU). If your device is supported, Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11. If it’s not supported, Microsoft says you should buy a new PC, preferably a Copilot+ PC.

These pop-ups create a fear that you are missing out on important updates, but they don’t tell us that we can keep using Windows 10 by subscribing to free Extended Security Updates.

Microsoft says you should upgrade to Windows 11 for “AI-powered productivity.”

In another ad on X, Microsoft argues that Windows 11 offers “AI-powered productivity” and these benefits:

    • Protection against evolving threats
    • Support for Microsoft 365 apps

Microsoft also says that you will be on the right side of risk (not history) if you dump Windows 10 today.

“Windows 10 standard support has ended. Stay on the right side of risk, upgrade now to the power of Windows 11 Pro PCs with Intel vPro,” Microsoft’s new ad campaign reads.

But neither Windows pop-ups nor commercial ads tell us anything about Windows 10 Extended Security Updates, and that does make sense. At the end of the day, Microsoft wants you to upgrade to Windows 11 and it’s giving everyone an additional year to decide.

Microsoft to push automatic Windows 10 upgrades in 2016

"Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be automatically rolled out next year to all users of its older operating systems who have selected to receive updates.

Until now, users of Windows 7 and 8 have needed to register to upgrade to Windows 10. But that's about to change: soon the OS will be listed as an 'Optional Update' and -- from 2016 -- a 'recommended' update that will automatically install itself, if users have opted to receive updates in that way.*Shadedshun :shadedshu:

You can opt out of automatic updates to avoid this, but Microsoftsays that "we strongly discourage this in today’s connected world because of the constant risk of internet threats". You can also change your Windows Update settings to install critical updates but not recommended ones. Although it's still going to be possible to avoid installation, Microsoft seems quite determined for everyone to be using Windows 10 in near future.

The roll-out of reserved updates was initially staggered but, according to Microsoft, now Windows "will automatically kick off the upgrade process once you have made a reservation".

As an intermediate stage, Microsoft says that it will "soon" publish Windows 10 as an optional update, not installed by default, but accessible to all users.

Installing Windows 10 on New PC?

I'm going to be building a new PC on Christmas and want to install Windows 10 on it. I have Windows 10 on my current PC, which I installed upgrading from 8.1 with the files on a USB. How do I go about installing a clean copy of Windows 10 on this new PC? I think I recall something about installing it once makes Microsoft recognize your hardware, but since this will be a PC I'm not sure what steps I need to take. Do I need to go 8.1 -> 10 or is there a method of going directly to 10?

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:
    • Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
    • Try different keyboard or mouse.
    • Restart computer, repeatedly.
    • Google for related issues.
    • Update Bios, because why not.
    • Create boot media and revert to windows 7.
The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.
