How to restore missing passkey in Windows 11

Hi Andreas, I am , a fellow Microsoft user like you.

I understand your frustration, and I'm here to help. You mentioned you're using Windows 11 24H2, are you using the Insider build or the new Copilot+ PC device?

This information will help me suggest possible steps without needing to perform a clean installation of Windows 11.

In the meantime about restoring Passkeys. Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to restore missing passkeys from Settings, and there's no current option to back them up or restore them. You can visit sites like Google or Adobe again, and they should prompt you to create a new passkey if it’s missing from your Windows Settings app.

Since you can't access the Passkeys section in the Settings app and running SFC and DISM didn’t help, you might consider performing an InPlace Upgrade or Repair Upgrade depending on your current build. Please let me know the answer to my question above so I can guide you further.

    Kind regards,

How to restore missing passkey in Windows 11

Hi Andreas, thank you for letting me know and for your additional questions.

Apologies for any confusion, but you don't need to run Setup.exe when performing a Repair Upgrade. All the steps are done in Settings and the Repair update will automatically download in the Windows Update section in Settings. Only in an InPlace Windows 11 upgrade will you need to run Setup.exe. May I know where you got that information from?

Regarding clearing the TPM, it’s optional and not a mandatory step for a clean installation of Windows 11. However, if you encounter any issues related to the TPM during the installation process, you might consider clearing it as part of troubleshooting.

About the 'Keypass,' I believe you're still referring to Passkey. The Passkey information is not directly stored in the Windows Registry. Instead, it’s managed through the Settings app. Passkeys can be created again if they are missing in the Passkeys section of the Settings app. You need to visit the site again, and it should prompt you to create a new Passkey. If it is missing in Passkeys in Settings after performing a Repair Upgrade, you can simply visit the sites again, and they should prompt you to create a new Passkey.

I hope this information helps. If you need further assistance or if the issue persists after performing the Repair Update, please let me know.

I’m going off to sleep now but will definitely get back to you shortly. Feel free to reach out in the meantime.

    Best regards,
