Emergency Windows 11 Updates Fix Shutdown And Remote Desktop Failures

Microsoft has issued emergency out-of-band updates for Microsoft Windows 11 after the latest security patches introduced two serious regressions. Affected systems were unable to shut down or hibernate correctly, and Remote Desktop sign-ins failed on certain configurations.

The issues appeared with Microsoft’s first Windows 11 updates released in 2026. Reports quickly surfaced from users who found that shutdown attempts would hang or fail entirely. Separately, Remote Desktop connections could no longer authenticate, preventing sign-ins to affected machines. Both problems were severe enough that Microsoft released fixes outside of the normal update schedule.

Microsoft has now published two out-of-band updates, KB5077744 and KB5077797, which are rolling out through Windows Update. Installing the updates restores normal shutdown behavior and resolves the Remote Desktop authentication failures.

The shutdown issue affects devices running Windows 11 version 23H2 with Secure Launch enabled. On these systems, shutdown and hibernation could fail after the January security updates were installed. The Remote Desktop problem has a broader scope, affecting Windows 11 version 25H2, Windows 10 22H2 ESU, and Windows Server 2025, according to Microsoft’s advisory.

Users who rely on Remote Desktop to access work or home systems were effectively locked out until the emergency patches became available. Microsoft has not provided a detailed explanation for how the issues passed testing, but confirmed that the fixes fully address the reported behavior.

The out-of-band updates are offered automatically via Windows Update. Devices configured to pause updates or managed through enterprise update policies may require manual approval or deployment before the fixes are applied.

These issues add to a growing list of Windows 11 update problems seen over the past year. Previous updates have caused Task Manager to remain running after being closed, leading to resource usage problems over time. Another update introduced a bright white flash when opening File Explorer in dark mode, despite being marketed as an improvement to dark mode behavior.

Microsoft has also had to fix an update that broke the Windows Recovery Environment, preventing users from accessing recovery options when troubleshooting system failures. Each of these issues was addressed after release, but only once users encountered them on production systems.

For now, Microsoft recommends that affected users install the emergency updates as soon as they become available. Systems that cannot shut down properly or accept Remote Desktop connections are expected to return to normal behavior immediately after the patches are applied.

  2. Remote desktop client broken on Windows 11 after update

Hello Anumeet, how are you doing?

    Welcome to the Microsoft community!

I'm glad to be able to assist you at this time.

    --

I understand your frustration with the persistent Remote Desktop issue on Windows 11. It's unfortunate that this problem has been ongoing, even after you've attempted various fixes that have been suggested online.

Considering the steps you've already taken, such as trying the UDP Fix and consulting your work's Consulting company, it's clear that the issue is specific to Windows 11 on your laptop. Since you've ruled out problems with your work computer by successfully using another Windows 10 machine for remote access, the focus should indeed be on resolving the Windows 11-related problem.

    -

While I don't have an immediate fix to offer, I can provide some additional suggestions that might help:

    1.Check System Updates.

In addition to Windows Update, ensure your laptop's drivers and firmware are up to date, as outdated components can cause unexpected issues.

    -

    2.Disable hardware acceleration.

This is a known fix for some users. To do this, open the Remote Desktop app's Settings > Show advanced settings. Uncheck "Use hardware acceleration" and click OK.

    -

3.Change the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) version.

To do this, open the Remote Desktop app and go to Settings > Show advanced settings. Select a different RDP version from the drop-down list and click OK.

    -

4.Set a static IP address for your remote computer.

This can help to resolve connection problems. To do this, open the Network Connections window and right-click on your remote computer's connection. Select Properties and go to the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) tab. Enter a static IP address in the IP address and Subnet mask fields. Click OK to save your changes.

    -

    5.Reinstall the Remote Desktop app.

To do this, open the Start menu and search for Remote Desktop. Right-click on the app and select Uninstall. Once the app is uninstalled, restart your computer and reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.

    -

If you have tried all of these fixes and you are still having problems, try connecting to your remote computer from a different computer to see if the problem is with your computer or with your remote computer.

    -

Remote Desktop problems can be intricate, but solutions often emerge over time. I understand the urgency and hope these suggestions will help restore your remote work functionality. Keep in mind that technology evolves and solutions may emerge with time.

Additionally, it's worth noting that Microsoft is aware of the Remote Desktop issue in Windows 11 and is actively working on a solution.

Emergency Windows 11 Updates Fix Shutdown And Remote Desktop Failures

    Remote Desktop Login Failed

I just purchased a new Windows 11 system and I am using another Windows 11 system on my laptop to access the system through remote desktop and I get an error that says that the login failed. Something in the new Windows 11 system is blocking logins from remote desktop:

    • I am using my standard Windows credentials to login locally. I have Administrator rights to the system, and a local login works fine.
    • I can use Remote Desktop to login to another similar Windows 11 desktop using remote desktop with the same credentials and that also works fine.
    • I've enabled Remote Desktop access in settings and specified my account as being authorized to login with Remote Deskttop.
I've gone through all the support articles I could find on the internet on this problem and I implemented the group policy fixes that have been recommended but it still hasn't resolved the problem. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
