Windows 10: Microsoft VP Signals Windows 11 Forced Account Requirement Could Be Removed

Microsoft Vice President Scott Hanselman has publicly responded on X, indicating that his team is considering removing the mandatory Microsoft account requirement during Windows 11 setup. Hanselman is leading efforts to improve Windows 11 quality, but no commitment or timeline has been provided.

The requirement to use a Microsoft account was introduced with Windows 11 version 22H2 in 2023, affecting both Home and Pro editions. Before that update, Windows could be installed using a local account without an internet connection.

How The Windows 11 Microsoft Account Requirement Works Today


Under the current setup process, users installing or configuring Windows 11 Home or Pro must sign in to a Microsoft account before they can complete setup. Creating a local account is not available during the standard installation. While workarounds exist, they involve additional steps that Microsoft does not highlight for users.

His team is one of several at Microsoft working on the broader Windows 11 quality initiative recently announced by the company, which focuses on improving performance, reliability, and user experience. Internal Debate At Microsoft Over The Forced Account Requirement


According to reports from Windows Central, some inside Microsoft are pushing to eliminate the forced account requirement. Several teams within the company benefit from users being linked to Microsoft accounts, which makes it more difficult to restore the option to use local accounts.

Current Workarounds To Use A Local Account In Windows 11

The open source tool Rufus can create Windows 11 installation media that bypasses the account requirement. There are also manual workarounds that involve specific inputs during setup, although Microsoft has previously closed some of these methods with updates.

Microsoft has not confirmed whether future Windows 11 builds will reintroduce the option to set up a local account or clarify which setup paths might be affected if policies change.

Windows 11 Microsoft Account Requirement

Several third-party sources suggest that Windows 11 Home and/or Windows 11 Pro will soon require the use or creation of a Microsoft Account during installation or upgrade.

If a Microsoft account is in fact being required, can someone point me to where the requirement is described on the Microsoft site? Thanks!

I suggest you backup your personalized files first before removing the account.
To delete an account, follow these steps:

1. Press WIN + X keys and click Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.

The Microsoft Account requirement for Windows 11 Home is already in place, users cannot installWIndows11 without adding Microsoft Account details, and that is due to also be added to the Pro version, however, Microsoft have not done that yet, because many business users report they cannot add Microsoft Accounts to their systems.

With regards to the requirement, it is true a Microsoft account must be used during the installation process, but that can be removed once the installation is complete and the system can be switched back to a Local Account.

There is no specific article on this requirement form Microsoft, but they do list that as a requirement on several Windows11 information pages.
