Windows 10: available networks in Windows 10 not opening, just flashes and disappears

My SSID has changed because I installed a new modem yesterday, and am not using the old router. I started our older laptop today to get it connected to the new SSID, but it won't show available networks. When I click on show available networks, something flashes on the screen and goes away. It didn't have this problem the last time I used it. Also, when I click on the WiFi icon in the taskbar, it does the same thing - flashes and disappears. Assuming it's the list of available networks flashing up and going away, but it's too quick to tell.


I used to have the same problem when choosing Start -> power options - the power options would flash on and then go away. I managed to get around this by doing the shortcut Windows key + x. However, I found a question today which said to do a sfc /scannow, which I did, and it now works fine. However, it didn't fix the other problem of showing available networks.


The computer is a Dell Inspiron 1720 which originally ran Windows 7, and I upgraded it to Windows 10 with the free upgrade.


I can't see how the new modem could be causing this problem, but just in case, it's a Shaw **** XB6 - see https://community.shaw.ca/docs/DOC-14080.


If anyone can recommend something to try I'd appreciate it.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Laptop won't show list of available networks

We suggest checking the list of available Wi-Fi networks on your laptop.

Please follow these steps:

• Click the Windows logo.
• Go to Settings (gear icon).
• Select Network and Internet.
• Then Wi-Fi.
• Make sure the Wi-Fi radio button is On.
• Select Show available networks, then you'll be able to see the list of available Wi-Fi networks.

I have problem only with "settings". I am able to click open all other listed apps and functions. My windows was all updated just before Windows 10 installation started.

I am working on other steps that you suggested above. Will let you know the outcome soon.
