Windows 10: Playing MP4 but Missing Codec 0x8007000e

Morning all
This has been an intermittent issue on this installation.


It plays fine one minute but next time i'd get this.

Also apps that need video or 3d display report that direct x is missing, whereas it wasn't at the beginning of the session.

dxdiag reports no issues.

VLC plays it fine, WMP plays it fine, but Windows Movies and TV does not. Ordinarily I'd say ok just skip the issue and go for either of the working alternatives but as mentioned above, this issue is deeper since other apps act as described.

Any ideas?

Play MP4 in Media PLayer


I am using mp4 files myself. Rather heavily. The files I have use the native h264 codecs for video and also something pretty standard for audio and they work. MP4 is a container format and I vaguely remember I once had a file, that did not play.

I am not a real expert here, but you can try this:

Download the static Windows version of ffmpeg and check your mp4 file with ffprobe.exe. It will output a bunch of information about that file, including the codecs used inside it. Knowing these codecs is a first step on the way to a solution.

 

Codecs no longer working after Anniversary update


Since the Anniversary update, I cannot play MKVs, MP4s and AVIs. I even installed the latest K-lite & CCCP after this. When I use WMP to play an MP4 for example, the program crashes. VLC plays AVI and MP4, but without sound.

Do you have suggestions what I have to configure in my codecs? Or something else?

What's the resolution, bitrate and frame rate of the file?

And what is the codec?

MPEG-4 (baseline or 1)

H264

As stated in the manual the device playes MP4 videos but not all version of the MP4 codec and certainly not all resolution/bitrate/framerate combinations.

But I can play a variety of MP4 videos including M4V videos (another form of MPEG4).
