Windows 10 -Sticky Notes Access Denied error - after upgrade

    Hi guys,

Since the sticky notes update, all our redirected profiles are getting an access denied error to the following path when opening the sticky notes app:
    C:\program files\windowsapps\microsoft.microsoftstickynotes....

I created a test account which was a redirected profile initially and I got the error. I switched the test account to a roaming profile.

Going forward, we don't want redirected profiles going onto roaming as we are deep into the migration and alot of users have been moved from roaming to redirected.

Is there any fix I can do to stop this happening for users with redirected profiles?

    :)

  2. Sticky Note Error?

    Hi,

To further help you with your concern about the sticky note, we suggest using System File Checking in Windows 10. Kindly follow the steps below:

    • Right-click (or press and hold) the Start button, then select Command Prompt (Admin)
    • Enter sfc /scannow (note the space between "sfc" and "/").

Let us know how it goes.

Was this the WIndows 10 Upgrade from WIndows 7, 8 or 8.1?

Check now for a C:\Windows.old folder that is created during an Upgrade. If that folder is found, you can

Show Hidden Files and Folders in Windows 10
and then follow the steps here:

    • To backup sticky notes in Windows 10/8.1/8/7:
STEP 1. Type %AppData%\Microsoft\Sticky Notes in the windows.old folder Search box.

STEP 2. Copy StickyNotes.snt to a safe location.

    • To restore sticky notes:
STEP 1. Type %AppData%\Microsoft\Sticky Notes in start menu search box or run and press Enter.

STEP 2. Copy the StickyNotes.snt file from your backup folder and paste it in the folder that opens. Agree to overwrite the old file, or delete it first before copying. If it balks then install and use the

    Take Ownership Shortcut
on the folder so you can replace the .snt file.

If you don't have Windows.old folder, do you have a backup image of your old install which we can help you mount to browse into the old files?

If not then your notes may be lost. In the future use Notepad or Wordpad which can more easily save Files to your Documents, or back up the Sticky Notes file regularly following the above.

  4. Windows 10 -Sticky Notes Access Denied error - after upgrade

Unable to access Sticky Notes with error: "Not able to start afresh. Please refer Help for more details.(Quit)" on Windows 10

    Hi Jaderuby,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community, we appreciate your interest in Windows 10.

I understand the inconvenience caused to you in accessing Sticky notes after upgrading to Windows 10, we will help you with this issue.

I would like to inform that when you upgrade to Windows 10 from previous operating system, all your data will be copied under Windows.old folder (Windows + E, click on
This PC in the left pane, double-click on C: drive(Usually the drive where operating system is installed) you will find
Windows.old folder after upgrading to Windows 10).

You may find the old sticky notes under this folder.

I suggest you to try the below steps and check if it helps you to access Sticky notes.

Step 1: I suggest you to initialize Sticky Notes from its source folder.

Generally, the default location is C:\Windows\System32\StikyNot.exe.

Step 2: Also, I suggest you to run SFC scan and check if it helps.

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

    Follow the below steps:

    • Right click on the Start button, click on
      Command Prompt (Admin).
    • Type “sfc /scannow” without the quotes and hit
      Enter.
    • After the scan, restart the computer and check for the issue.

Hope it helps. Reply to the post with an updated status of this issue for further assistance.
